   Doing a 'stadswandeling' - a guided walk -in Brielle is a great way to explore the historic centre. We picked up the guide from the tourist information and did the Oranje walk, giving us enough little insights to even keep our teenagers interested.    The Langepoort looks robust. It was built in 1704/1705 as part of the modernization of the Brielle fortifications during a time, walls with narrow gates were still seen as helpful protection against enemy attack. Effectiveness was already undermined by the use of gunpowder. The gate structure is slightly slanted. The presence of a 'ravelijn' (small defense island) at its westside suggests it is a long entrance, perhaps explaining why the gate is called 'lange poort' (long gate). Cars can still enter the city here, though the street behind the gate has been closed off for motorized traffic. Walking through the gate feels a bit like going through a tunnel. Langepoort and Kaaipoort are the only two 18th century city gates that have remained more or less intact. See more..

   When I saw this small quaint house surrounded by water at Bastion II for the first time, I thought how nice it must have been to live in a free standing house like that. After reading, I understood this is a camouflaged old powder bunker. Gunpowder used to be essential in the defense strategy of a city. It was difficult to store safely. The authorities in Brielle were smart enough to find a solution. The original gunpowder house was built in 1653 at a safe distance from residential areas and with ditches around. A pity that during a renovation in the 1970s the unique barrel shaped vault structure was removed. See more..

   The very worthy church is dedicated to the the martyrs of the atrocities which happened during the "foundation" of the Netherlands. The so called watergeuzen imprisoned 19/23 monks and priests living in Gorcum during the fight of the Spanish government of the Spanish Netherlands in 1572. The only fault of those martyrs was to be Catholic in a very wild protestant area. Far from understanding the gospel, the watergeuzen hanged all of them in a barn at the site of the church. The martyrs and confessors found their final rest in this wonderful catholic church built in the 1930. It is a place to worship and to pray for the murderers, the forgiveness of our sins and the conversion of protestants to be unified with the only holy church of Christ again and for His only truth, His only way and the everlasting life with Him.    Reeds in 1390 werd er melding gemaakt van een Stadhuis, op de locatie van het huidige gebouw. De oudste delen van het gebouw zijn dus waarschijnlijk 14e eeuws. Van het exterieur van dit oude gebouw is helaas niets terug te zien. De voorgevel werd in 1639 vernieuwd. In 1792 werd opnieuw verbouwd. De voorgevel van het smalle, hoge en vooral diepe gebouw kreeg een zandstenen bekleding en werd ingericht in de Louis XVI-stijl, verwant aan het z.g. classicisme. Mooie voorgevel, evenwichtige indeling van vensters e.d. en een fronton met het stadswapen. Op het dak een slanke dakruiter (het torentje) met luidklok. In het raadhuis vergaderden de gemeentebestuurders .. ook de burgerwacht had er een feest- en vergaderzaal. Nu al lang geen stadhuis meer. In het gebouw is nu het Historisch Museum Brielle gevestigd.     More a park than a forest, though there are over 500 trees. I understood each tree has a guardian. Remarkable is the "insectenhotel", a place especially arranged for insects. I did not see any! Overall the park is a pleasant place to stroll around. You can observe the site is in good care by motivated volunteers. Moreover, it is bordering the lake, a suitable place for a picnic or a break while cycling to historic Brielle, which is closeby. See more..

    Once part of the river Meuse (Maas), since 1950 a lake, Brielse Meer is an attractive area for boating and watersports. The area is excellent for cycling and hiking around as well. Northwest to southeast at Zwartewaal the lake is some 12 km in length. Near Brielle there is a ferry, but only operational during daytime in the summer. See more..

    In the Eastern wall of the Brielle fortress from 1709 (well-restored in the 1970s) this gate provided access to the city from the nearby quay. It is relatively small and narrow. The masonry shows the craftmanship of the builders. The original guardhouse (now a normal dwelling) is still intact. The word 'kaai' (quay) is still very much used in Flanders.     Perhaps this former orphanage building is most special, because of the story of Angelus Merula, the pastor of Heenvliet who was convicted to be burned by the Spanish Inquisition, because of heresy. Merula probably had seen it coming and wisely ensured his proporties (he was from a wealthy Den Briel family) could not be touched by the Catholic church. Instead orphans for centuries were taken care of, by using his inheritance. Merula died of a heart attack on his way to the pyre in Mons (Bergen) in 1557.     Renovated in the 1960s this former former (military) guardhouse now serves as an ordinary dwelling. So be discrete when observing the place. The original mid 18th century square functional structure is still well recognizable. The old watergate it used to guard has long been demolished. There are many similar structures in the Netherlands for instance in Maastricht and Geertruidenberg. The one in Jutphaas where once 137 soldiers could be accommodated was probably one of the largest.     Wat verscholen achter een paar bomen, staat de provoost die is gebouwd in 1668 en tot 1922 als cachot in gebruik geweest.. Dit is de voormalige militaire gevangenis en de plaats waar de krijgsraad bijeenkwam. Later werd nog het stadsarchief er in onderbracht maar nu is het een woonhuis. See more..

    Het Asyl voor Oude en Gebrekkige Zeelieden is in 1872 gebouwd met 14 woningen in een neo-Renaissance-stijl bestemd voor oude en arme zeelieden. Het geld voor de bouw hiervan kwam uit giften. Zodra er wat geld was begon men alvast met de bouw. Oorspronkelijk moest het hofje een U vorm krijgen maar er was geen geld meer voor de westelijke vleugel. In het hoofdgebouw is het regentenhuis en het beheerdershuis.
    Het is een prachtig rijk gedecoreerd pand met een rozentuin maar misschien had met dat toen met de bouw beter weg kunnen laten en de U vorm dan kunnen bouwen. Het pand is een scherp contrast met de mensen die er toen mochten wonen. See more..

    In het midden van de 18e eeuw vestigden een aantal joden zich op Voorne-Putten, o.a. in Brielle en Hellevoetsluis. Vanaf 1809 maakte de Brielse joodse gemeenschap gebruik van een huiskamersynagoge, vergelijkbaar met een schuilkerk. Pas in 1871 kwam op de Turfkade een "volwassen" synagoge tot stand, met een joodse school en een "mikwe", een ruimte waar rituele baden werden genomen. De synagoge staat er dankzij een grondige restauratie rond 2005 weer fier bij, maar kende daarvoor een slechte periode. Tijdens WOII werd het gebouw geplunderd door de bezetters. Tijdens deze oorlog werden alle Brielse joden vermoord. Het gebouw deed zo'n 50 jaar dienst als pakhuis. In 2001 werd het gebouw gekocht door de Stichting Behoud Synagoge Brielle.
