The Wakhan Corridor or Valley stretches from Khorog to past Langar, along the Panj (or Amu Darya) river which forms the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The river itself is green/turquoise in color due to the minerals it carries, and the landscape along this valley is spectacular in both countries. We were on the Tajik side, and along the alley, you get hot springs (Bibi-Fatima, Garam Chasma), ancient fortresses (Yamchun), ancient Buddhist Stupkas (at Vrang), Museum at Yamg and great farming etc etc. This is definitely a must do See more..

I love Alauddin Lakes, they are just amazing.... the water is so clear that you can see the bottom!Nature all around the place is wonderful, and from there, there is the chance to go over passes and reach other lakes like the Mutnoe Lake or the Kulikalon Lake. It was so spectacular the night in tents on the lake shores, under a dark sky full of stars! Definitely a MUST-see. See more..

Stylish Ismaili Centre is a luxurious and minimalist modern example of Pamiri architecture. It is a community center and providing many types of educational training to kids, youth, and women of the Khorog area. You can visit this Muslim Community center with a Volunteer guide and learn the objectives of the center in a quite memorable way. My visit day was Sunday and I was accompanied by Ms. Sitara who was a volunteer guide. Indeed, she told me about the history and details of the center in a friendly way. Pictures are not allowed in most of the central places. Only at designated places, you can get pictures. There was a giant lawn chess set where I played a memorable game with kids. Four friends and I spent two weeks trying to see a snow leopard. Two of my friends did. All of us saw Markhor, Ibex and unusual birds. We were fortunate to be able to watch buzkashi, a sport played on horseback using a goat carcass instead of a ball. I’m serious. The accommodations were rustic but clean. Food was very good. The guides and scouts were very friendly and helpful. My only criticism of the trip is that there were sometimes other parties in our basecamp, which made it a little crowded. Several of these other travelers were conspicuously poor sports. This is an adventure trip, with rough roads, occasional bad weather and narrow, steep trails over unstable terrain. Nobody can guarantee that you will see an animal. Bring your sense of humor and leave the entitlement at home. See more..

While the lake is not much to write home about, it is quite nice, but Yashikul lake, a few kms to the west is more spectacular. However, we were fascinated by the village of Bulunkul, which had about 38 families (37 of them are Pamiri's) living in this harsh highland desert area. We visited the school (K-Grade 4) and really enjoyed talking to the staff and 18 students there. Wish we had more time and stayed here; it is a little west of the M41 Pamir Hwy, but the roads were reasonable and scenery along the way was spectacular See more..

The Hisor History and Culture Reserve is a collection of archeological and historical monuments from different ages. As everywhere in Central Asia, the authorities have been heavy handed in "restoring" the site ; the Registan large square in front of the fortress is now clean and pedestrians only. There is a Soviet war memorial that really doesn't fit well in this mix and should be relocated. The whole area was of huge strategic importance during the Silk Road Era. Consequently it has a violent past, being attacked more than twenty times ; famous names such as Cyrus, Alexander, The Arabs, Ghenghis and Babur all had a go at Hissar Fortress. In front of the fort is Registan, the large square, and the old 16th century madrasah, now housing a museum ; and a new madrasah from the 17th century. Finally there are the foundations of a caravanserai, two mosques and the mausoleum of Makhdumi Azam. It is easy to spend 2 hours exploring the lot. See more..

The Khorog City Park is an amazing park near the edge of the city but really attracts a lot of people and seems to be pretty well taken care of too. Many people there who can show you around or point things out on the city skyline, never in my years did I think a place like Khorog existed and was successful, thriving and becoming a centre in itself. Men and women use them separately, and have set times for both pools, so they can both enjoy the indoor and outdoor natural pool. facilities are basic, but the place is clean. The day we went the market was very small because there was a music festival in the city and most people did not know that the market was going to be held. We were lucky enough to get there about 2 hours before it closed. There were merchants selling traditional clothes for about the equivalent of $6 and there was one merchant selling old jewelry with the silver stamp on it. Mostly there were fruit and veg displays. I bought loose Kohl for my kids to be used for eye makeup and some lovely old jewelry. The merchants were mostly Tajiks who live in Afghanastan because that is where their families have had property for 100's of years. It was fun meeting the people and talking to them with the added bonus of some wonderful purchases. See more..

One can find caravanserais throughout Central Asia and they were an integral part of the Silk Road, allowing the caravans to stop & refresh every 25km or so. This medieval guest house was built in 1808 next to the Kukhna madrasah. “Khishtin” is translated as “made of brick”, which is obvious when you visit. The fragments of the buildings foundation as well as the ruins of the walls were, unusually, completely laid of burnt brick. Only the foundations and some part of the walls are left now, making it hard to picture what exactly you're looking at. I helps if you visit with a guide. See more..

The Kuhna madrassa is right opposite Hisor Fort, across the Registan. The facade is most impressive, with a large portal, four arches on each side and two defensive (?) towers on the side. Inside the madrassa is the usual large court, used in summer for outdoor teaching. The courtyard is lined with lots of dormitory cells, which would have housed two students each. Currently they serve as display pods with a mixture of different items of interest ; one of them has a good size 3-dimensional scale model of the map of Tajikistan, showing that 93 % of the country is mountainous. It is a unique collection of artifacts from the area and about the history as well which is kind of neat.
