Passing through Khorog last August as part of our drive around the ‘stans we had a look at the Khorog Regional Museum. It is a unique collection of artifacts from the area and about the history as well which is kind of neat. Lots of well cared for exhibits about what you can find around Khorog and easy to understand as well. Worth a visit.

Sometimes bizarre but mostly rich with artifacts of a different time
This museum is a bit difficult to find, and it has moved a couple of times, which makes asking around quite difficult. Once you get in, there is a short hallway with some famous portraits and photographs, and then a medium sized room with rows and rows of artifacts. There are also several disturbing stuffed animals that don't seem to have their eyes on right, which can be pretty unnerving (I loved it). My favorites to see were the old playbills and books in glass cases and the traditional pamiri style rug woven with a portrait of Lenin in the center. I recommend this if you have about an hour to spare in Khorog and you want to see some history blended with some strangeness.

    Interesting displays, but poorly maintained
If you pass through Khorog, it is worth spending one hour in this museum. Unfortunately, it needs a serious renovation, and it is poorly maintained (although 3 or 4 members of staff were sitting idle in the lobby). Everything is in Russian only.
