Nice village by this Alpine lake
While the lake is not much to write home about, it is quite nice, but Yashikul lake, a few kms to the west is more spectacular. However, we were fascinated by the village of Bulunkul, which had about 38 families (37 of them are Pamiri's) living in this harsh highland desert area. We visited the school (K-Grade 4) and really enjoyed talking to the staff and 18 students there. Wish we had more time and stayed here; it is a little west of the M41 Pamir Hwy, but the roads were reasonable and scenery along the way was spectacular

Serene lake with a warm spring
We went there in late afternoon in June when the lighting was the most beautiful. Not only were we able to quietly enjoy this lake all by ourselves, there was a nice warm spring nearby which one can go and enjoy. Great experience.

Stunning
While the lake is stunning the real draw for me was staying in the town next to the lake. This is as real as it gets - yaks roaming on the plains, locals playing volleyball before supper, women setting out piles of dung to dry for use as fuel. The stars at night are unimaginable as there is no light pollution. Only a couple of houses have solar panels and therefor, lights. It's not an easy place to get to nor the most hygienic or comfortable place to do a home stay, but the experience is unforgettable. One side note; seven km up the road is a lovely hot spring, complete with bath tub. As there is no running water in the village, hot or cold, it provided a warm bath and shampoo after a day of dusty roads.
