Yes the west coast is far from San Juan but if you land in aguadilla your pretty well located - we stayed in joyuda ( a small but very cool place ). Yes beaches in the west and sunsets are amazing !! Driving on this island is easy you can do farthest half ( for us was San Juan ) in 2.5 hrs -- so basically stay in west plenty to see and do - if you want more visit north , south , mid and east island just a drive away ... This Cathedral is right on the main central square Plaza Colon, opposite the Town Hall. It's a classic Spanish style two tower Cathedral with nice interiors. It had beautiful decorations for Christmas/New Year. We had luck being there during the orchestra preparations for the New Year's concert, which was very joyful to listen. See more..
