The region of Chinandega where Cosigüina volcano is located is a tropical dry area, so do not expect cool weather, instead you will experience one of the wildest humid and warm places. During the hike you will be able to see many birds and if you are lucky (and early enough) you may see some small wild pigs and almost for sure the steps of the wild deer. Do not go without a guide, there are many confusing trails that may make you lose your way. The views at the summit are gorgeous and you will feel like the effort was worth. When back in Potosí you can learn about the local fishing business and if you dare you can swim in the local popular natural swimming pool. There are two roads to the Cosigüina summit, I would recommend the Potosí trail for those who want a full experience and the Cabo de Hornos road for those who want to hike the shortest way. Excellent archeological museum with precolumbian artifacts from Nicaragua. The pieces are very well preserved - many appear to have been found intact. The colors are still visible. Covers the history from 8000 BC to 1500AD. Yes the guide only speaks Spanish, but he is very knowledgeable. This museum is part of a research foundation and school so they are very proud of their history. I liked this better than larger museums which have fewer objects. And some of these you could even touch! Plan on spending an hour in the museum. And the surrounding town has some squares and churches to see, plus plenty of street vendors on the weekend. See more..

This church holds a statue that was brought over in 1562. The altar is a beautiful silver piece and the ceiling is all hardwoods and gorgeous. This is worth a visit if you are in the area. It’s a good spot to go on shore excursions from Corinto. Much nicer than the church in Chinandega. See more..

Stepping off of ship we were greeted by children “gift bringers” and beautiful Nicaraguan dancers of all ages - We were then met at the port entrance by Reynaldo and his driver. Note that we pre-booked with Reynaldo prior to cruise departure from San Diego. Reynaldo speaks excellent English, has a clear love for his homeland, people and history. He took us into an old school bakery, city market, downtown historical districts and churches, papaya and peanut fields, and plenty of spots for scenic and live volcano photos. Reynaldo is a genuine gentleman. Gracious and generous. If you’re visiting this area or cruising this port ditch the ship itinerary and excursions. This is a must visit when in Chinandega. This beautiful Church is a true treasure that hasn't been renovated. The high Altar is truly stunning along with its side altars and communion rail. It's has some of the most beautiful statues in the city. Especially in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel there is a beautiful Sangre de Cristo that was brought from Italy. The Chapel is open 24 hours a day. Unfortunately the music was very modern during Mass. See more..

We arrived via cruise ship to Corinto and we decided to just walk around the town instead of doing a tour. We happened upon this small Catholic church of Saint Thomas Apostle. It is very pretty inside with lots of statues, pictures and a confessional, besides the main altar and side altars. If you’re wandering around Corinto this small Catholic church is certainly worth a visit. See more..
