  1. 5.0 Iglesia San Rafael del Norte (24 reviews)
    - Gorgeous
    Churches & Cathedrals
Iglesia San Rafael del Norte image
This church is located well above street level. A short pilgrimage is required to walk up the steps. This destination is located in one of Nicaragua's most religous and safest cities, they do not employ a police force. It is a very small city, with not much to do except visit the church, but let that stop you. Try some of the street food and enjoy the fresh open air. See more..

Our family spent 2 days with the ladies and have an unforgettable experience. We learned all about the process, while getting to know the women, and enjoying their hospitality. We all had the opportunity to make several pieces ourselves, returning the next day to fire and etch. Truly unique and memorable. See more..

    Apanas Tours Jinotega image
This new tour operator in Jinotega organises very well and personal organised tours for a decent price. The guides are well-informed and very friendly. They speak Spanish and very basic English. The head of the office is very friendly too and keeps your personal preferences in mind. We had a fantastic day with our guide Andy hiking in the Datanli-El diablo reserve and visiting a coffee plantation! They also offer tours in Jinotega city or multiple day tours around Jinotega. Travel Jinotega picked us up from the airport the first time we visited Nicaragua and made what could have been a nerve-wracking experience for newbie travelers into a delightfully relaxing trip to our final destination. We now live here and have used their services on numerous occasions. If you are traveling to Jinotega where the company is based, they also run one of the local taxis and Marconi and his drivers are always very quick and helpful when we call. Thanks Travel Jinotega! Farms
    Eco Albergue La Fundadora image
We did 3 days here as we wanted to experience the mountains, the forest and the coffee country. As non Spanish speakers our main concern was language as we wanted to be educated & guided. As it turned out they have an English speaking guide called Falix. He took us on several walking tours the highlight of which took us to a coffee smallholding. The farmer (a lovely man) showed the whole process of nurturing a coffee plant from seed right up to harvest, refinement and drinking of the coffee. This is a really authentic experience far from the madding crowd. The Eco Lodge is a co-operative so whatever you spend (and it is cheap!) is used to help the community. Great place. We were even invited into the guides house to meet his family. He didnt want money he was just a great guy. See more..
  10. 4.5 Macizo de Penas Blancas (4 reviews)
    - Nice hike to a great waterfall
    Forests

If you can get here I highly recommend this hike. Lush forest on a sometimes steep and muddy trail that is in good shape. No rain on the day of our hike but it had trained a lot recently (common in cloud forest) and trail was muddy. Walking by the creek at times is nice. The waterfall is awesome! In February it was going strong (a little more water than the pic attached by the previous reviewer) and our guide from Matagalpa Tours said it is even stronger in the rainy season. No swimming in the base though since it is a water source for some nearby towns. We saw some birds (including an owl) on the walk. Not as many birds here as some other places we hiked in Nicaragua (maybe due to thick forest so they were harder to find. There is an entrance fee but that was included in our tour. Also had a nice lunch down the road from the trailhead. Might be about 2-3 hours to get up and back. See more..
