Namuli, the Lost Mountain is a worthwile discovery of one of the world’s least-explored and most-threatened habitats. Mt. Namuli, a 7,936-foot granite monolith, is the largest of a group of isolated peaks that tower over the ancient valleys of northern Mozambique. Gurue Town is the starting point for the trip. Quelimane Cathedral image
It's a bit telling I guess when the number one attraction in Quelimane according to Trip Advisor is a dilapidated old cathedral that's basically used as a dosshouse for local drunks. It's still cool, provided you don't mind the pretty strong stench of excrement and vomit. All a bit sad. That said, and I don't know why the guidebook we had doesn't make this clearer, they've built a new cathedral in the centre of town, and it's stunning. Amazing use of stained glass in a peculiar shaped structure. I only just remembered this now after writing a review for the (very nice) cathedral in Nampula, but the one in Quelimane was my single favourite religious building in 6 months in Southern Africa. So 5* for the new one, and 3* for the old one that's unfortunately not being remotely cared for. See more..
