    Gangtey Monastery image
The Gangtey Monastery is located on a hill ridge overlooking the vast and beautiful Phobjikha valley. There is even a trail that starts down from the valley up to the Gangtey Gompa. The monastery was built in the 17th century and is considered as the largest Nyingma monastery in Bhutan. It houses a temple in the centre surrounded by residential quarters for monks. The architecture and colours used to design the monastery are incredible. The wood carvings are wonderfully done. The Gangtey Gompa hosts a black-necked crane festival every winter when the cranes arrive in Phobjikha valley. It is believed that they circle the monastery 3 times when they arrive and leave the valley. After breakfast, walk along Gangtey Nature Trail, crossing streams, pine trees, and villages. As the black-necked crane flew over me, I felt so blessed. Stunning views of the entire Phobjikha Valley. Attend the evening chanting of 300 monks at Gangtey Monastery. When in season, watch cranes from the deck using binoculars at the Crane Information Center See more..

    Black Necked Crane Center image
Visiting the Phobjikha Crane Center was a breathtaking experience! The sheer beauty of the birds was so captivating that it was impossible to look away. Not only were we able to observe the graceful flight of the cranes in their natural environment, but we were also able to learn about their conservation efforts through interactive activities and knowledgeable staff members. I was deeply touched by the efforts the center makes to protect and nurture the cranes and would recommend anyone visiting Bhutan to pay the center a visit! See more..
