The bazaar was restored in the mid 1960s, but the wood-built shops and narrow cobbled streets have been authentically restored to their Ottoman origin-style. The extra long eaves and the gutter in the middle of the cobbled street direct rain so it drains straight away. Many shops sell small souvenirs...while there are also the traditional felt makers who produce slippers and felt caps. Be sure to be tempted by the great variety of carpets and rugs which are a local tradition handicraft, called a qilime. And also be on the look for beautifully hand crafted wooden bowls and servers made from local olive wood. It's a short drive from Tirana, so makes for an easy day trip. See more..

Within the fortress is located one of the main attractions, the National Museum "George Castroti Skanderbeg" (Muzeu Kombetar "Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu" in Albanian). This museum was built in early 1980s by architects Pranvera Masha and Pirro Vaso. Inside the museum a lot of original bibliography, documents, objects and authentic reproductions that represent the history of Albanian people in the fifteenth century are displayed. We (a tour party of 39) were taken here on a recent holiday, and it was a real highlight. We were told we would be sampling local wines and produce, but were unprepared for the generosity we would encounter. The tables were laden with appetizing food, and there was a good variety of wines, spirits and liqueurs to sample. Hosts Arb Shtylla and Sokol Vezi were friendly, and I came away with a bottle of Skenderbeu brandy and an orange liqueur :) See more..

The solitary, cobblestone pathway leading up to Kruja Castle was lined with the wood-constructed shops of the Old Bazaar. There was a unique feel to this low-key marketplace which tended to take one back centuries with its variety of wares. However, it almost seemed like they knew we were coming (which of course they didn't) because we found a number of items perfect for the upcoming holiday gifting. We quite enjoyed our browsing and shopping experience and even found the prices to be reasonable...compared to the other tourist areas in Albania. Take as little or as much time as you want. Only one of three floors has exhibits at the moment. There are a good number of funerary stelae, pottery and statues covering from the founding of the city through Roman times. While modest, it is worthwhile attraction for any tourist in town. The lighting is excellent. It's apart of a promenade in Dürres, worth visiting when you are in the area for people watching. The surrounding beach is filthy and full of black mud and seaweed, but it does not stop locals from enjoying it. There are some statues nearby that people use for taking photos. Durres Amphitheatre stands in the sole city center, very easy to reach. It dates back to the 2 cent built by the Roman Emperor Traian. The imposing structure leans on the remains of medieval protective walls. It was one of the biggest built in Balkans, with capacity of around 15.000. If you're tight on time you don't have to go in, as almost all is visible from the entrance fence, and even better from the elevated spot by the mosque stairs on the opposite side. However, paying the symbolic (around 1 Euro) fee you'll be rewarded with some preserved mosaics in inner hallways from the Byzantine era. Unfortunatelly, it's clearly visible the amphitheater's neglected (probably during the communist dictatorship era) and a lot of unplanned building occured all around it, which doesn't leave a good impression on such a historic treasure. I hope the authorities will find a way to preserve this historic landmark. See more..
