The Gili Trawangan Turtle Hatchery

Even though there's not much to see the locals have worked so hard to keep the sanctuary alive to help the suffering turtles. The experience was very moving and changed my life. I did a TED talk on it in Indonesia at a school and have been donating money to the aid since 2010 and from the earthquake I'm still trying to gather money to donate to help them. This area should be conserved and taken care of and they are important. They clean the beaches and only the tourists can fund their care. Because of my support for them I was even allowed to help and host the annual Sea Turtle release. This was an amazing experience and I very much recommend it.

    Good intentions
I don't know much about marine turtles, but am very experienced with freshwater turtles. So it was quite obvious that many of these had bacterial infections and some possibly with respiratory issues. I spoke at length with the person in charge discussing the situation. The bottom line is he is doing his best with no government funding, only from donations. This place has saved hundreds of turtles that would otherwise not be around. I would recommend supporting the cause with your donation. It will help to achieve a better survival rate.

    A quick look
You may miss this place if not paying attention. Myself and my partner had a wander along to see some baby turtles as we had been snorkelling with the big mum and dad turtles the previous day. 3 tanks, with shallow water and turtles of different ages in each tank. Within a few seconds we were approached by a man I assumed worked their. I was keen to know some interested facts about the turtles and what they do for their conservation. He told us the ages of each turtle tank and then went on to offer us a day trip snokelling around the islands etc. I asked him a few questions but he was too busy trying to get my partner to book this tour. Turns out he had come in off the street to sell his tour and from what I believe he wasn't associated with this organisation. I was disappointed as was keen to know more that what the information board informed me. The turtles are tiny and cute and I do believe what they are doing is helping towards conservation of the species as many don't survive the journey from hatching to sea. You can spot the baby turtles trying to swim towards the beach so their instincts are still active! You'll see many older, bigger turtles just off the shore! Stop by for a quick look but be cautious of people trying to sell you tours. Claire
