Not at its best for the moment

Spending a week-end in Mons to visit an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts (BAM) we didn’t have much time to visit other sites. But of course, we headed for the cobbled Grand Place. As architecture lovers we were quite disappointed because the most interesting building, the City Hall, was clad in scaffolding and the façade was completely hidden. We also missed information boards on the major buildings. On a sunny day, the Grand Place, which is lined with cafés and restaurants with large outdoor seating areas, was very busy and rather loud. There were lots of kids playing in the water jets fountain or climbing the huge ‘I love Mons’ letters. A fitness centre had installed a large number of exercise bikes in front of the city hall and, in the evening, there was Latin dancing.

Lively square with the town hall
A rather large square with on one side restaurants and terraces, and on the other the town hall and 2 nice, older buildings. It is a very lively square, with some performers when I visited, as well as some temporarily places trees. This is the square where the fight between the dragon and St George is enacted every year. Hard to miss.

    Relaxing
Sitting here in the full heat of summer and watching the world go by is a wonderful thing. The Grand Place has something for everyone: beers, burgers, ice cream, fountains, architecture... you won't be disappointed.
