Beautiful monastery in the woods!

Villers Abbey (abbaye de Villers) is an ancient Cistercian abbey located near the town of Villers-la-Ville, 50 minutes from Brussels. Founded in 1146, the abbey was abandoned in 1796. Most of the site has since fallen into ruins.

    Sooo beautiful
If you don't have a car, it is not that hard to get here. Book a train ticket through Belgium's main train line (Trip Advisor will not let me post the link here to help you plan travel) from Brussels Central with one change over out to town and then it's about a 15 minute walk to the abbey. Once here you will be immediately struck by the beauty of the place. Not to be missed is to slowly walk along the entry walkway once you've come out of the entrance building and look down to your right. You can walk your way through history to see soooo many events that have taken place in the world since this wonderous place has been built. It's really amazing to think how long this has been here. Every turn provides you with a new view of history and to imagine what this really looked like when it was still fully intact. I could gush about how awesome it is but wouldn't know where to start. A true gem of history outside of the city.

    Wonderful Abbey ruins to explore!
Wonderful Abbey ruins await your exploration here! I visited with a few others on a Saturday morning in very pleasant, sunny weather, which made a refreshing, idyllic day out. The place is rather large, but can be fully covered in an hour or two. Great place to take photos. Signs are posted throughout the Abbey that explain the history of a particular building or way of life in ages past (signs in French/Dutch/English). Decent sized gift shop with toilets at the beginning where you buy tickets (also the same place you finish the tour and exit). Parking lot (free) across the street from the main entrance, though this was mostly full by the time we arrive around 10AM. The parking lot appeared to be used by many others for trekking in the nearby woods. Certainly recommended!
