Being rich in the South West side of Walachia was not an easy task a few hundred years ago. Constantly targeted by various looters and Ottoman troops, the local landlords built their houses like defensive towers, surrounded by fortress type of walls. The structure name was cula, from Turkish word kula, meaning defensive tower. Just a few "cule" are still standing nowadays and the ones in Maldaresti are among the best preserved ones. They have even been used as movie setting for some historical Romanian movies (Aferim by Radu Jude is the most recent one) The Museum includes Cula Duca, Cula Greceanu (the oldest in Romania) and I.G Duca memorial house, which could be visited with the same ticket. A nice experience, overall. See more..

See more..
