Mikkeli Cathedral was built in 1896–1897 in the Gothic Revival style. The bell tower is very high. The interior is also strikingly beautiful. There were a small violin concert last time we visited this church. Old wooden building sounds well. So well that the cover of accompanied piano must keep closed. The church was opened 1822 and second largest wooden church in Finland, measured by seating capacity of 1700. It largest wooden structure of its construction technique. Charles Bass designed the church and original plans had seating capacity of 5950. However when building was started, it was decided to make smaller. Berndt Godenhjelm, local artist, has painted the altar picture with Jesus being carried to Heaven 1831. First organ was installed 1870s. Currently church is under renovation. Outside you can see a big rowing boat, demonstrating how Finns travelled to church during the old times.See more..

Old wooden church, repair designed by Alvar Aalto is located along the road 62 between Puumala and Mikkeli. Alvar Aalto designed the church repair in 1926.
