We visited here as part of a group tour on a Danube river cruise. Lovely church to visit. Really ornate. Look out for the crucifix in the grounds outside which has been sculpted using discarded guns and ammunition. Very moving. See more..

The Đakovo Cathedral is definitely the must see place in Đakovo, it is something you cannot miss while here. It is a beautiful neoromanic style church and with its 84 metres it is the building that it is impossible not to see, it is even visible from the highway. The interior is even more beautiful looking than the exterior. I was there on a rainy day so the colors could not be seen as brightly as they would be on a sunny day, but it did not really take away its beauty. I am not sure if it is open all the time, when I was there, on a saturday around noon it was open and there were few people also visiting and those who worked there.See more..
St. John Capistrano (or Kapistrano) was a religious and military leader, who fought the ottoman Turks side-by-side with the Hungarian military leader Janos Hunyadi. He was a Franciscan friar of major influence and is credited with multiple healings in life. He was buried in Ilok, supposedly where the Sanctuary stands today. The Church and the Sanctuary inside, stand next to a Friary, which remains active today. The entire complex is on the land of the Ilok Castle, and historical castle of which only the main palace remains. This palace has been recently refurmished, reconstructed and today it houses the Ilok Historical and Archaelogical museum. The Museum is just a block or two from the church, so make time to visit both. The neo-Gothic church has lovely frescoes, both inside and outside, especially on the frontispice. Guided tours provide the best perspective of the historical significance of the complex. The view from the top of the belltower is spectacular.See more..
