Iolani and history
Iolani Palace, the official residence of Hawaii’s monarchy, is a marvel of opulence, innovation and political intrigue. Meticulously restored to its former grandeur, this National Historic Landmark in downtown Honolulu tells of a time when their Majesties, King Kalakaua, who built the palace in 1882, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, walked its celebrated halls. Today, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular living restorations in all of Polynesia and immerse yourself in Hawaii’s royal heritage. E komo mai! Welcome!

Quick history lesson about Hawaiian Royals
So happy that we were able to fit in a visit to the Iolani Palace the day of our flight home. The staff was so welcoming and helpful. We had audio tour reservations at 1pm but had no problem getting in at 11:30am. Of course, we were lucky to go during a quiet time of the year and also, with few to no foreign travelers due to covid restrictions. It was amazing to see the palace with so few tourists. We did not feel rushed or crowded. The restoration done in the building is impressive. You really feel like the inhabitants just stepped out instead of having lived there over 100 years ago. The audio guide was very informative. I knew very little about the Hawaiian kings and queens but this visit really peak my interest. We came home with Queen Liliuokalani's autobiography to learn more about Hawaii's last monarch. If possible, I highly recommend scheduling a Friday visit as to hear the Royal Hawaiian Band play a free concert outside from 12 to 1pm. Mahalo to all the staff at the Iolani Palace!

Iolani and history
We went on the self guided audio tour early Tuesday morning. I recommend the earliest time you can so that parking is comfortable. There is a limited number of people indoors at the same time so we felt relieved. I recommend reading bit of the history beforehand so you can really take it all in. The docents were so nice and gave a personal flair. So many pieces of history, especially the artifacts in the basement. The restoration of the palace was amazing, and so different than what I remembered from ~50 years ago. The gift shop had unique items, and we bought historical books at a good deal.
