Roasting Kona coffee Hawaiian cowboy style!
We signed up for the Paniolo roasting experience and coffee tour, and thoroughly enjoyed both. Our tour began by checking in, then enjoying coffee samples poolside enjoying the amazing view. We were then greeted by Cooper and Ben, who lead us through the experience of roasting roasting our own coffee Hawaiian cowboys style. Cooper lead the in depth discussion which delivered everything they advertise, including their impact on the Big Island and in Kona Coffee. Ben roasted with our group and assisted with our roasting the coffee beans in cast iron skillets. We had a great time learning the history of Hawaiian cowboys and Kona coffee! 5 star experience and we highly recommend immersing yourself in this experience while visiting the Big Island!

Roast Your Own Coffee
We booked the Paniolo Roasting Experience and had so much fun, it was an incredible value. Our hostess was so informative as we learned about the history of coffee and the Paniolo (cowboys) on Hawaii and the culture of the area. She was so friendly and she played music and we chatted and laughed while we roasted coffee beans to our preference in a cast iron skillet the cowboy way. At the end we tried our hand at grinding some beans by hand and made a pot of our freshly roasted coffee. We each got to take home the beans we roasted. The main area had breathtaking views and we were invited to spend as much time as we wanted on the patio enjoying coffee and candy samples or even take a swim if we liked. Everyone we interacted with was so lovely and welcoming.

Cole and Grady were excellent hosts
We met Grady before our tour and spent a good deal of time talking with him about the farm and the work done to make the best possible coffee. He was very personable and informative. He even took time after our tour was over to seek us out and thank us for talking with him. Cole was our tour guide and he's the antithesis of he kind of tour guide who seems to be struggling to act enthusiastic while reciting a script by rote. He continually engaged us as a group throughout a tour the ran over an hour with some great stories and a wicked sense of humor--he definitely could do improv if he wanted. His explanations of the processes and innovations Heavenly Hawaiian has made (e.g. storing beans in a conditioned 'vault' until right before roasting to keep the roasted product as fresh as possible vs. roasting right after harvest and letting the roasted beans sit until sold weeks/months later) really helped us understand how they strive to produce the highest quality coffee possible. And, the price for the tour was just $6 (and all the coffee samples you wanted, plus a delicious sample of coated macadamia nuts and a cascara tea made from coffee bean husk). Oh, and did I mention the swimming pool?
