Triumph Arch (Arcul de Triumf), Bucharest, Romania

A large proud landmark for everyone to enjoy!
Far too much attention comparing this Romanian landmark with the Paris icon. There are many similar arches around the world in other countries and they are all built beautifully and architecturally interesting. The importance is that each one is historic to each country and when they were built, they were built with care and pride. As with all the others, this one in Bucharest is a proud landmark to the Romanian people and enjoyable to see and appreciate. I like large landmarks like this one, very helpful toward getting to know your way around the busy city. This one is on a very busy traffic area, many people get to catch a glimpse to and from.

Impressive but difficult to find out much information
The arch is impressive enough and with the nice park next door, its worth a look - especially since metro rides are so cheap! There is a lack of information in English about when it is open however (if you can find the website, it is general information about the state monument protection authority) so it is pot luck if its actually open or not when you go. We went Easter Saturday, but it was not open. Nice view, of it, in spite of this.

Interesting how it got here
Located in the city's busiest intersection, it was originally built of wood after Romania gained its independence (1878) so the troops could march under it. Rebuilt in a much more ornate style, it crumbled over the years. Finally the current Neoclassical design was modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and was inaugurated in 1936.
