Musee Magritte Museum - Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels, Belgium

This is Not a Pipe

This is a museum inside a building that holds several. They're all worth visiting but I wouldn't do more than two on the same day. Can be quite overwhelming. The Magritte Museum is an obvious go-to if you want to see the works and works that led to works, the life history, etc. Personally if I had time for only one Magritte Museum I'd recommend visiting his home only a short tram ride from the centre away. But if you have time, both are rewarding in their way. I mean, if you like art and you're in Brussels, this is the man to immerse yourself in.

Lots of cool stuff and air conditioned!
Yes, it's dark and somewhat confusingly laid out, but we thought it was a great museum. Non-French speakers might like a little more explanation, but the point is the art, so how much reading do you really want to do anyway? We bought the 15 euro ticket that also gives admission to the Musee des Beaux Arts and the Musee Fin de Siecle, which had some great paintings by Breugel, James Ensor, and Impressionists. It's an odd 8 floor sub-basement complex, but they do have a lot of cool stuff. Well worth 15 euros!

    Ceci n'est pas une disappointment!
I've been a fan of the works of Rene Magritte since I was a shoestaring teenager, and this is the first time I've ever had the opportunity to see his works 'in the flesh' so to speak. So the Musee Magritte Museum was a definite must-visit on a trip to Brussels. As one of the founding fathers of the Surrealism movement, Magritte is quite rightly celebrated as one of Brussels' finest artists. Aside from a bit of annoyance trying to get into the galleries (the security guard controlling entry was extremely annoying and confusing, and didn't seem to register that we didn't speak French nor understand his requirements) we entered the galleries, presented in low light to preserve the works (yes folks, that's why it's 'dingy' you numpties!) That said, each work is presented beautifully, adding to the atmosphere of the works themselves. Having now seen his work up close, I'm just captivated by how fine his brushwork was. Even visiting with a couple of non-art lovers, there was plenty to gaze in awe at and I feel like I've made my homage to the great man himself. Great shop too with a ton of weird and wonderful Magritte-themed gifts for the art lover in your life. Recommended!
