  2. 5.0 Doe Orchards (9 reviews)
    - Just apples, no hoopla!
    Spent 1-2 hours Farms
    Doe Orchards image
Fall in New England is apple-picking season and many of the orchards have become "attractions" in and of themselves. Hayrides, corn mazes, hay mazes, cider doughnuts, and more. But sometimes...you just want apples. Well "just apples" is what you'll get at Doe Orchards in Harvard, MA. It's a quiet, walkable orchard with many varieties. The setting is beautiful. At checkout, you can grab a pumpkin or some decorative gourds or some cider, but that's about it. And it's awesome. If you're looking to avoid the crowds and hoopla, find some great apples, and settle down to a picnic lunch, Doe is your place. Oh--and the kids (or grownups) can climb on a few tractors, too. They also have berries and peaches (summer) and Christmas tree cutting (after Thanksgiving). See more..

    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge image
Expect to see wildlife. Great blue herons, ospreys, beaver, and kingfishers are common. I have also seen huge snapping turtles, barred and great horned owl, muskrat, raccoon and even a bobcat. There are some resident swans near the route 2 highway. Put in easily at Still River in Harvard and take out at the portage on the Ayer- Shirley road near the Sherman gate of Devens. Takes about 2-3 hours of slow paddling. Fishing isn't great though. See more..

  6. 4.5 Carlson Orchards (11 reviews)
    - Hidden Gem in the open
    Spent 1-2 hours Farms
    Carlson Orchards image
We went to the Cider Barn at Carlson Orchards in Harvard, MA for lunch. The Cider Barn offers flights and pints of their 3 hard ciders (currently) being Oak Hill Blend, Honeycrisp and Summer Shandy (lemon). They also have a few different flatbread pizzas (we had a delicious peach one), baked pretzels and cider donuts. This operation also has a pick your own for apples and other fruits and a store to buy fruit, veggies, sweet and hard ciders and of course cider donuts. The Cider Barn has physically distanced tables both apple crates and stools for couples and tented picnic tables. There is good parking at least on weekdays, but I could see it stretched on weekends with the restaurant, store and PYO. Beautiful orchard scenery at top of hill. Servers were excellent and accommodating. Everyone required to wear face coverings, except when seated/eating/drinking. Definitely a repeat destination. See more..

I am not in the shooting, but one of my colleagues took me there. It is a private club and you have to take membership for it. You can bring families and friends with yourself. I cannot give specifications for range and action pits as I am not the right guy but we tried 3-4 pits. I shoot with AK47- AR15, Pistol, and shotgun. You have to follow rules over there. Clean your mess after done with shooting. I guess up to 200 yards you can shoot. Wonderful experience…!!! See more..
  9. 4.0 Harvard Bowling Lanes (1 review)
    - Traditional New England candlepin bowling in casual, comfortable setting
    Spent 1-2 hours Bowling Alleys
On a chilly, rainy Monday, our adult son's birthday, we spent a fun family afternoon at Harvard Lanes. It's totally old school with well-maintained lanes, exclusively candlepin bowling, using the original smaller bowling balls, 3 tries per frame. The person on duty kindly explained how to keep score and our three generations had a blast. It's a lot easier for the youngsters to heave a lighter ball and be super competitive with the adults. We used the bumpers in the gutters, which helped us all a lot, since you can bank the ball off when picking up spares. They offer inexpensive snacks, souvenirs and arcade and even have party rooms. This would be a great place for a birthday party at any age. On Friday & Saturday nights, they have cosmic bowling with rock music & light show, great fun for a date or for families with older kids. I had never tried candlepin bowling before and can't wait to do it again next time we're in the area. See more..
