Plantation Reynsdorp (Bakkie) is a former coffee plantation (founded by Nicolaas Reynsdorp in 1744) with old locks and buildings. Museum Bakkie has one of the most unique private collections in Suriname, with many original books, prints, maps and objects. When you visit Bakkie, developer Bas Spek and Marsha Mormon (descendant / heiress / plantation developer) are ready to welcome you. Bakkie is a very small-scale company with almost no staff. Going to Bakkie is to visit Marsha and Bas. See more..
  3. 4.5 Marienburg suikerfabriek (10 reviews)

We were lucky to be led by an elderly guide who had worked at this sugar factory for 40 years. He knew the place inside out and it was very interesting to listen to his explanations as to how it ran, about the people who worked there, problems that arose during work, what happened to people when the factory closed etc. He had a book of photos and hand drawn illustration so that he could fill in where there were no ruins to point to. Some of the ruined buildings were rather ominous looking and I even asked myself if it would be safe to be inside. This tour was very educational and interesting. See more..

Peperpot Nature Forest Foundation manages the natural wealth that arose after the end of the old Peperpot coffee and cocoa plantation in Commewijne. The area of approximately 820 hectares houses a unique ecosystem with a large variety of animals and plants, just 5 kilometers away from Paramaribo. Part of the area has been made accessible as a nature park that will be developed in the coming years with the support of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and other partners into an important destination for nature education and recreation. Fort Nieuw Amsterdam image
We drove a rental car 24 km northeast from our Downtown Oasis Guesthouse, crossing over the 1 mile Suriname Bridge and arriving here at 11AM. After paying $2 US each at the entry, we strolled along the fort's earthen walls, seeing military artifacts along the way to the Gunpowder Storage, Carriage House, Plantation House and finally the Prison. This facility had concrete cells and other rooms with displays of the varied immigrant cultures (many descriptions in Dutch) that make up the present day Suriname citizenship. Driving 6 km east to add the 1882 Marienburg 'suikerfabriek' ruins made for an interesting morning tour. See more..
  6. 3.5 Hindustan Mosque (3 reviews)

    Hindustan Mosque image
Of course, we did not get a chance to enter this mosque. We went passing the mosque and admired the beauty of it. There are quite a few mosques in Suriname, but we did not see any other in New Amsterdam. So, in that sense, this was special. See more..
