Mountain Bike Nomad Day Tours image
We came to Eco hotel Koros in June and stayed there for three nights before we started our selfguided tour, organized by Dixie, the owner and hus family. Our staying was amazing, the simple, basic and beautiful running of the farm, the hotel and the bike tour was a pleasent surprise. Dixie's philosophy in being in a balance with nature and the surroundings, his ecological style and the simplicity of everything there really touched us. The trails were really good, the guides supernice and friendly and the food was good, simple but fine. We'd love come again with all our friends and spend some more days at Dixie's farm. OLIMPIJCI IZ ČRNE NA KOROŠKEM/Olympians from Črna na Koroškem image
Črna na Koroškem is a small village (and a community) in Slovenia nearby Austria under the slopes mountain of Peca/Petze Mountainn. It has no more than 3.500 inhabitants and seven olympians - includede Tina Maze, two times olympic winner in skiing. In the middle of settlement iit's is situated the oldest roundabout in Slovenia, parish church, the village inn, mayor's office, monument of famous architekct Jože Plečnik and in former post office two museums. One it is of ethnical entities, the second one it is celebrating Črna's olympians. Museum is no bigger than fourty suare meters, but it is fulfiled with original items of a single olympian as are skiis, hats, racing-suits...Museum is also equiped with several touch-screens, where you can watch different races in skiing, ski-jumping, and check out different data about single participants...And just near the entrance it's a small and old grotta with stuffed brown bear. A kind of excentrity-as it is driven all along this cute settlement. See more..

  10. 4.5 Plecnik Monument (2 reviews)
    - Famous Architect Jože Plečnik, Črna' Roundabout War Memorial and Marble Head of King Aleksander
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
There are two romours/hearsays about roundabout in Črna na Koroškem. It is is considered as a first of it's kind in this part of Europe. Second one is addresing on memorial's top sculture of head - it is likely to be a part of former monument of King Aleksander, placed in Kongresni park in Ljubljana, which was destroyed by Italian Occupation Forces in 1940. As Črna's memorial was designed by famous Architect Jože Plečnik (and his co-architets: Mrs. MIlica Dentoni and Mr. Anton Biten) who was known as quite-a recycler in terms of building materials it is likely to be even true Nevertheless this is true or false, it is one of Masters last works and worthy of visit observe and admire! 11. 4.0 Church Of St. Peter On Kronska Gora (1 review)
    - A baroque gem, accompanied by great views
    Churches & Cathedrals
Church Of St. Peter On Kronska Gora image
This huge, red, twin towered pilgrimage church, sitting approx. 140 meters above the Mislinja Valley (hint: if you desperately need to add additional height meters to your Strava statistics...), indeed must be noticed from virtually any point in Šentjanž or Otiški Vrh. And the opposite applies as well, great views of the lower Mislinja Valley and western foothills of Pohorje are available from the church's site. The church was built in the mid 18th-century, in the golden era of baroque when exaggeration with beauty was actually a must. As such, the church is rather atypical for the region, more famous for numerous gothic churches. Being a parish church, holding regular holy masses and other religious ceremonies and with an active cemetery behind the church, it is logical to expect the church to be easily accessible by an asphalted road. You only need to spot a well marked branch off the Dravograd - Slovenj Gradec main road. Initially the slope is quite steep then it moderates a bit. I am not sure if any official hiking shortcuts exist. BTW, the name "Kronska gora" could be literally translated as "crown/coronation hill" but it turns out that the name in fact originates from Korovnik, the original land owner's name. See more..

  14. 4.0 Rotunda Of St. John The Baptist (1 review)
    - One of the oldest churches in Slovenia
    Churches & Cathedrals
Rotunda Of St. John The Baptist image
Origins of this beautiful rotunda, located not far from the mouth of the Mučka Bistrica, date back to the mid 11th-century, making it one of the oldest existing churches in Slovenia. Admittedly it was consecrated by the Pope Leo IX during his travel to Carinthia and Styria in 1052. Later an early Gothic presbytery was attached to it. The church is easy to find as long as you search in the so called "Lower Muta", i.e. Muta's eastern core. It is just a few steps away either from the "Pri lipi" inn or from the "Mitnica" bar. It is also easily noticed from the Maribor - Dravograd main road. See more..

    Forma viva Ravne Gallery image
As the whole anex of former stables of Ravne Castle was renovated in last years, somehow someone was able to squiz-in small exibition-place for Forma Viva Ravne. It's tinny but well designed and it gives you a lot of data abaout the artefacts/scultures of forma Viva, as displayed in urban places of City of Ravne na Koroškem. Do leave your vehicle on large parkinglot downhill and take a stroll through large park, designed in "english-style". You want regret - it is so green and fresh and also some of Forma Viva's is on displey on open space. See more..
  16. 3.0 Church Of St. Nicholas (1 review)
    - Notable for A.M. Slomšek and "inverse Pietà"
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Church Of St. Nicholas image
The church is probably dating back to the 12th-century, later extended with Gothic additions. To Slovenians, the church is also interesting for Anton Martin Slomšek, an important figure of 19th-century history of Slovenian Styria, who spent a few years in Vuzenica as a pastor. During Slomšek's term, the church and the nearby rectory were restored thoroughly. If you look around the church you should notice an 18th-century sculpture with an unusual motif, a total contrast of the much more common Pietà. It depicts a man, holding St. Mary in his arms. According to one theory, St. John the Apostle is holding dead St. Mary. According to another theory, St. John the Apostle has just caught St. Mary who fell unconscious under the cross. Yet another theory believes, the man is actually Jesus, with two pointed fingers showing his dead mother the path to the Heaven. Oh yeah, the church is situated in the village core with narrow streets. So, leave your vehicle at a parking lot near the bridge or school and take a short walk westwards. See more..
  17. 3.0 Sedelnikov Slap (sedelnik's Waterfall) (1 review)
    - Difficult to get to
    Hiking Trails • Waterfalls
    Sedelnikov Slap (sedelnik's Waterfall) image
With 23 meters of height, Sedelnik's Fall (Sedelnikov slap) is among the tallest Slovenian waterfalls outside of the Alps and definitely the tallest one in the Kozjak range. The path to its base is decently well marked, it is neither long nor steep, but its final section is difficult, sometimes requiring walking on possibly wet rocks of the creek's bed. Don't even think about going in sandals or even slippers! Good mountaineering shoes are actually a must, accompanied by basic mountaineering skills, such as maintaining balance. A helmet is recommended. To get there, leave the main road Maribor - Dravograd either in Muta or in Gortina and take the northern parallel road between both settlements. At a well marked branch head northwards to "Bistriški jarek" (actually this is the other name of the Mučka Bistrica valley). Proceed northwards. Once you approach the village of Pernice, park your car at a parking lot near the former school, today bearing an inscription "Glasbeni dom". From "glasbeni dom" proceed the main road northwards and after a few meters turn right onto a paved path. Walk past the Ecological Chapel, cross the Mučka Bistrica river and enter a narrow gorge. After a few minutes there is a branch to Sv. Jernej nad Muto (a possible "extension" of the trip, allow approx. 2 hours each direction). To get to the waterfall, "slap" is the sign to follow or simply trust common sense and proceed along the creek. After this branch the path becomes difficult, so walk slowly, carefully and watch every step. Eventually you'll reach the fall's base. As there is no alternative, you must return the same way. 18. 3.0 Church Of St. Gertrude Of Nivelles (1 review)
    - An old early-gothic church with decent views
    Churches & Cathedrals
Church Of St. Gertrude Of Nivelles image
This early-gothic church of St. Gertrude ("cerkev sv. Jed(e)rti" in Slovenian), first mentioned in 1278, is located in Sv. Jedert, once a separate village, now a hamlet of Bukovska vas. When cycling the Štrekna's section between Slovenj Gradec and Šentjanž, the church should be easily spotted on the western slope of the Mislinja Valley. From the junction near a truck parking lot where first spotted, branch southwestwards, at the next junction in the hamlet's core turn left and then immediately right. While ascending, the road will make a semicircle around the church. Most likely the church will be closed most of the time (consult the Parish of Šentjanž pri Dravogradu for more details) but some decent views are still possible from the church's site, in particular of Šentjanž. 19. 3.0 Church Of St. Acacius (1 review)
    - Lovely
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Church Of St. Acacius image
This lovely late-gothic church of St. Acacius ("cerkev sv. Ahaca" in Slovenian) is situated right at the main road between Mislinja and Slovenj Gradec and definitely attracts each passerby's attention. An attempt to admire it for longer than just a few seconds might sound a little bit tricky at the first glance as parking right near the church is not possible. Should you want to dedicate a little more time to the church, just branch off the main road at the well marked junction to Šentilj right near the church. In Šentilj find a legal parking, for instance near the village's culture hall, and take a short walk back towards the church. And when you already are in Šentilj pod Turjakom, reserve a few minutes more for its parish church and memorial chapel to victims of WW1. The church can also be easily noticed from the Štrekna cycling trail when you ride from Slovenj Gradec. In this case, access to the church is even trickier without violation of private property but a little longer detour is still possible: proceed further to the former Mislinja railway station and turn left, cross the main road, near the Tuš supermarket turn left, ride past the school to Šentilj and turn left again at the first junction where this is possible, i.e. near the previously mentioned culture hall. Probably the best views of the church are available from the other side of the main road (when not interrupted by dense bypassing traffic), either from the bus stop or an access road of a nearby house. 21. 2.0 Former Rail Bridge (1 review)
    - A reminder of Lavanttalbahn
    Bridges
    Former Rail Bridge image
As of 2020, this abandoned railway bridge over the Drava is actually the town's disgrace and only interesting to hard core rail history and/or industrial archaeology enthusiasts. Now it is a reminder of "good old times" when Dravograd was an important railway junction. The original bridge was built in 1879 as a part of the Lavanttalbahn section from Dravograd to Lavamünd and further to Wolfsberg. In April 1941, right after the German invasion, the bridge was demolished by the Royal Yugoslav Army and restored by Germans soon afterwards. In 1965, the section to Lavamünd was abandoned and so was the bridge. To reach it, start at the Traberk business center, walk past a stadium and a cemetery and descend to the river's bank. Or alternatively, start at the recently restored old road bridge and walk the "Ribiška pot" upstream the Drava past the hydroelectric power plant's dam. Except this extension of "Ribiška pot", the bridge is completely inaccessible. Below the bridge there is a board with some basic information about the bridge's history and some archive photos. Nearby there is also a small bar as the area is popular among locals as an unofficial "city" park. Future plans are currently rather unclear but recently the municipality has restored all other Dravograd's abandoned bridges and converted them to pedestrian and cycling paths. If this bridge is ever restored, the Dravabike cycling trail will probably be redirected onto it. See more..
  22. 2.0 Former Hydroelectric Power Plant Pustnik (1 review)
    - Another reminder of mining past
    Dams
Former Hydroelectric Power Plant Pustnik image
Dam of this former hydroelectric power plant can be easily noticed by walking along the current course of the Meža river between Mežica's downtown and its industrial/mining "suburb" of Polena. Nothing has remained of the power plant's engine room, located approx. 500 m downstream. The power plant was built by Russian prisoners of WW1. It was operational from 1917, when the Meža's course was redirected from the current main road, till 1967. It was wholly owned by the mining company and provided electrical power for mining operations. Today the dam is used as a narrow pedestrian bridge. On the other bank you can see one of two Francis turbines, used by the power plant, and a board, primarily intended to children. It provides some very basic information about hydroelectric energy and about local animal and plant species. See more..
  23. 2.0 Water Tower (1 review)
    - Landmark of "Upper" Muta
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Water Tower image
This round 3-storey water tower with a hexagonal roof, built in 1927 and reconstructed in 1931, is actually one of landmarks of "Upper" Muta, easily found at the northern edge of its core (Glavni trg). The tower was opened by a well known Slovenian writer Lovro Kuhar, better known by his pen name Prežihov Voranc. See more..
  24. 2.0 Church Of St. Leonard (1 review)
    - Built on a watershed
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Church Of St. Leonard image
This filial church is actually a Mislinja's landmark as it's impossible to miss if you approach Mislinja from south, either by the main road from Velenje or by the "Štrekna" cycling trail from Gornji Dolič. Actually there is nothing so special about the church itself, except the fact it was built right on a drainage divide. So, when it rains, half of the rainfall from its roof is drained into the Paka and subsequently into the Sava while the other half is drained into the Mislinja river and subsequently into the Drava. The trail is super technical, but there are some nice and flowy sections where a rider can rest and enjoy views of the chambers. If parts of the descent prove too challenging it is easy to walk through them and jump back on the bike afterwards. See more..
