Some parts of the canyon were '1-sided', but still presented with nice view. Able to kayak along a nearby river. See more..

    - Some temples behind the walls

Kharkhorin is worth to visit if you`re in Mongolia, but don`t expect a lot. On the big territory rounded by strong walls, there`re only few temples and other buddhist and historical sights and the most part of this territory is only plane field with grass. It`s hard to believe that here was Mongolian capital before. The best way to visit Kharkhorin is by day tour from Ulaanbaatar. If you start in early morning by Jeep you have chance to return back about midnight. If you prefer to get to Kharhkhorin by plane, check the airline schedule, several airlines offer tours for 1, 2 or 3 days to Kharkhorin, but it could cost a lot and I`m not sure that there`re so many sights near that you can explore for 3 long days. I think it`s enough 2-3 hours for Kharkhorin monastery which is almost unique interesting place in this area. See more..
  3. 4.5 Erdene Zuu Monastery (117 reviews)
    - Interesting Mongolian Tibetan Buddhist monastery
    Religious Sites
    Erdene Zuu Monastery image
Not necessarily the easiest place to get to, but worth the trip. A mostly intact Mongolian (Tibetan) Buddhist monastery. The wall paintings are particularly worth seeing in the Western and Eastern Temples. A short walk from the rear is the famous tortoise and the site of Karakoram (really nothing left to see). As it is a long way from Ulaanbaatar it’s best combined with other nearby attractions (eg. Karakoram Museum, Tovkhon) See more..
  4. 4.5 Monument for Mongol States (3 reviews)
    - Scenic viewpoint
    Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues

This is a rather new monument with interesting design presenting three diferent empires that lived in this area in different ages. But the main value of the place is a great view on the valley and the town. Just beware the strong wind on top. See more..
  5. 4.5 Tovkhon Monastery (3 reviews)
    - Worth a visit
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
    Tovkhon Monastery image
A beautiful monastery in a beautiful location. This monastery, founded in 1648 by a 14 year old Zanabazar, who brought Tibetan Buddhism to Mongolia, is set in the forested hills some 40km from the ancient city of Karakoram (near modern Kharkhorin). There is a road that will take you about halfway there, then you need to access the site by horse (recommended) or foot. There is no information at the site, so read up about it first. The topmost areas (moderately easy to access but unlikely to be disabled friendly) are limited to men only. Photos of the exterior only as it is still an active religious site. Probably the earliest Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. See more..

  7. 4.0 Orkhon Waterfall (9 reviews)
    - Stunning Views
    Spent 1-2 hours Waterfalls

The waterfall itself was just ok. What was captivating was the surrounding views with the river and streams. It was really nice to walk around the waterfall which could take several hours. Or you can choose to climb down the cliff to the bottom if you are adventurous as the way down is steep. I choose to just walk around the waterfall. See more..

  11. Erdenesiin Khuree (0 review)
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Art Galleries
