Hiking Trails

The Mullerthal Trail is the leading hiking track in the Mullerthal Region - Luxemburg's Little Switzerland. The Mullerthal Trail with more than 112 km is composed by 3 big tracks (Route 1, Route 2, Route 3).Route 1 and Route 2 pass through the City of Echternach which is largely known as the cultural and historic highlight of the region. The three routes each have their distinction:Besides the cultural highlights, Route 1 shows the typical landscape elements which are the rocks, forests and pastures. Route 2 passes through the heart of Luxemburg's Little Switzerland and offers most spectacular rock formations. Route 3 features next to the rock formations many stream valleys and romantic castles. The routes are all connected but can also be hiked separately. The hikes are all quite individual as departures can be undertaken from the various localities. Furthermore, the Mullerthal Trail offers four (smaller) tracks, the ExtraTours, which can also be characterized as very attractive hiking tracks. They can be considered as departures as well as additional tours when all the other hikes have been undertaken already.The Mullerthal Trail and the ExtraTours have been signalled completely which gives you a great feeling of security and prevents from having bad surprises. The Mullerthal Trail is leading repeatedly to beautiful view points and to natural and cultural highlights. Walking on the Trail is thus an unforgettable experience for every one.Children will love the region as the wonderful rock formations want to be explored and climbed. Parents of smaller children though should take especially good care and watch their children as security barriers are not always guaranteed. I visited with a friend and we were not part of a large group but our pleasant guide and wine connoisseur gave an excellent introduction in the cellars. We opted for the Discovery Tour'. ‘Unfortunately’ she did not explain much about the wines after the tour but let us taste them alone and come to our own conclusions. She left us in the hands of a wine server who admitted that this was his first day on the job and did not know anything about wine. He was extremely friendly, gave us some tips of what sites and restaurants to visit in both Luxembourg and Germany and let us sample all the wines we wanted besides the official three glasses. The winery itself was reachable by bus from Luxembourg city but be careful as some buses were not available when we visited. They have wines for every budget and are good value for money. See more..

We did the E1 hike, which passes through this gorge of wolves. We did not spot any wolves, but the rock formations are fantastic, and the area feels a bit like out of a fairy tale, with strange rock formations and woods. The route is very well indicated by signs, so it is not necessary to buy the map the tourist office has for sale (which includes plenty of other walks as well). Start the E1 walk from Echternach, ask the tourist info which direction to take it, as one leg involves a lot of climbing and coming down, the other is much flatter, ideal for returning to Echternach. Strangely enough, before we came to Berdorf, I had been talking about water towers and how they work, then to find there was one in Berdorf that we could actually visit was great. Thank goodness for the guide books in several languages as everything inside the water tower is in German. The views from the top are lovely, and the cloud formations made it even more special. We got to see the Echternach city hall as we walked through the city exploring it on foot. Place du Marche is a main city square and the city hall is located right there. Nice stately architecture with the impressive facade adorned with sculptures of the cardinal virtues. This medieval building was originally a court and a city prison. See more..

We explored the Southern part of the Moselle Valley, starting at Remich and ending at Shengen. Our favourite visit was to Caves des Vignerons de Wellenstein, part of the Domaines de Vinsmoselle co-operative. We had tastings and matched wines to our personal preferences. The experienced staff were phenomenal, especially the Elderly gentleman (sorry I didn't catch his name) who was very knowledgeable. Highly recommend the cremantes. We bought several cases of wine at very reasonable prices. Will be going back the next time we are in the region. See more..

Our first trip out with our 'Seniors' Club for 16 months. This was a really enjoyable visit with a guided tour, in English, by very informative lady. The museum is in a small village of the Moselle Valley and consists of exhibits covering the local folklore, lives of the vinyard people and children's toys of the last few centuries. Well worth a visit when in this beautiful area of Luxembourg, and making a day of it. Entrance price €5 is quite reasonable for the time you can spend there. See more..

Due to the isolated location this is an undamaged beautiful preserved castle also on the inside. Due to it s location you need to park (with payment) then either take a medium difficult hike or the bus (payment) to the entrance. On the premises the obligate restaurant and shop. The tour was taken in English but the German guide found the right pronunciation and translation difficult. Inside are gorgeously preserved rooms with original furnature and items, unique! I would not recommend it for people who experience difficulties in walking due to many narrow steps and uneven floors. Despite Corona measures worldwide the group was rather large and rooms small so no way to keep your distance. Organisation wise there is definitely room for improvement. See more..

We were very excited to discover this Villa Romana place while visiting the Echternach Lake. It is free to enter and open every day except for Mondays. There is a nice small museum with a tiny but interesting souvenir shop. You have to pay for guided tours but there was none in English when we visited. The museum shows replicas of some artifacts and recreates the villa’s ordinary life snap-shots with real life size figures. From the museum one walks out to the actual site of the luxurious Roman Villa where you can convey a self-guided exploration. The only minus is the obvious lack of explanatory notes in the language most international tourists commonly use which is English. It is a sorry oversight. See more..
