Top week's skiing

An infinite snowy area that begins at 1,524 metres, in Valtournenche, embraces Breuil-Cervinia, rises up to 3,480 metres of Plateau Rosà, touches the 4,000 m peak of Piccolo Cervino, climbes up to 4,478 m to the top of the Cervino. An area where the infinite snow continues on the Swiss side to Zermatt. An area where the snow is the setting of sport, holidays and fun. The tourism vocation of Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche had it’s beginning more than two hundred years ago. Excursionists and academics were the pioneers of a tourism that united sport, scientific study and intellectual exchange. In 1936, a new Breuil-Cervinia was created. The construction of the first cable car was a cutting-edge work of engineering excellence. The Hotel Gran Baita situated at the foot of the slopes, with the cable car departure station annexed to it, anticipates by over half a century the concept of an integral complex for skiing. Breuil-Cervinia became the Queen of the snow. From sport to cinema, politics and commerce, those who count meet here. Innovation, in Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche, is the key word. New ways to practice sport, new ways to enjoy a holiday, new services to allow more free time. The technology is not limited to the rapid lift systems, but also to the territorial fibre optic network that allows the information to be transmitted in real time. Time and space dimensions have changed thanks to the e-skipass, to the keycard and to the hotel reservation system via the internet. 350 thousands web navigators every month visiting the site to check out the webcams, weather reports, lift status and snow conditions. In Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche, collaboration between the operators in the area guarantees guests quality and state of the art solutions.

    Autumn holiday
We have skied first time in Cervinia this year. We wanted to go to ski during autumn school break. In Cervinia winter ski season have been opened for two days:( and therefore we could go up using small Gondola or chairlifts and we could avoid using huge Gondola during corona time. As we didn’t want to use big gondola we just used several winter slopes. The slopes were very good prepared, it was not many people during that time inspire of weekend. Chairlifts and gondola are modern, so you don’t need to wait for a long time in the queue. What we don’t like and why I am giving only 4 stars: Corona distance was not always possible to keep in the ski resorts. During ski break there was one restaurant which we wanted to go, but due too many people staying in the queue near each other we didn’t want to go there. Also there were no WC which we could use by going directly from outside. You can only use restaurant WC, by passing tiny entrance crowed with people, who want to get to the restaurant. There was also no option to buy something to eat or drink outside.

Excellent ski area however we had 1 day closure and 2 days with restricted lift
The mountain area is fantastic, the views are amazing. We had intended to buy the extended pass however, the lifts at the top were closed which meant that we purchased a local pass only. Day 1 - only a few lifts were in operation allowing access to the Plan Maison and below. These shut midway through the day and did not re-open until mid day on the 3rd day of our trip. We arranged for a coach transfer to Pila on Day 2 which is around 1 hour away and is an option if Cervino is closed. Days 4,5 and 6 the mountain was fully open and we explored all areas on the Italian side. This is a perfect resort for intermediate skiers - we tackled all runs on days 4 and 5 and then chose to revisit our favourites on day 6. The runs are wide and open and most are in the sun for most of the day however, a couple of gripes. Firstly there are no trees so many of the runs feel the same and secondly the wind can be very strong as the valley seems to act as a wind tunnel. The lift system if reasonably good with some modern lifts however there is a drag lift back from Salette which can have long queues in the afternoon. The large gondolas are standing only and each time we got on it was so packed with people it became too hot and uncomfortable for me. More cramped than the London Underground at rush hour. Overall we loved the resort but have a doubt if we will return because of the risk of closure / limited lift opening because of the wind.
