Horezu Monastery - beautiful pastoral setting

Horezu Monastery sits beyond the small village in a hilly setting with fruit trees and hay. The long cobblestone path takes the visitor upwards and out towards the fortified walls made with brick and stone (similar to the oldest church in Cortes de Arges). This monastery features intricate carved details in the stonework not seen in other monasteries. Definitely worth the trip. The surrounding area is also rich in weaving/tapestry making and pottery, with the distinctive rooster motif. A cultural center at the entrance to the monastery, where the parking lot is, displays regional costumes and handicrafts.

    Awesome
Beautiful Brancovan style monastery, with well tended grounds. There are several buildings in the area, at least two are being restored. The richness of the decoration is astounding, and it is full of religious treasures. Arriving in the morning it was pretty quiet. When in the area do not hesitate to visit Olari's workshops to see the Unesco ceramics they produce there. And also visit the culas, a bit further south! Turkish style defensive houses, pretty interesting.

    Peace and decency
Extremely quiet with beautiful surroundings, this is how I feel all monasteries should feel like. Up on a small hill, with restricted car access, the compound is beautiful and feels very peaceful. There are several small shops inside where you can find religious items, but also home made syrups, sweets or honey. On the way out you can buy small souvenirs, some manually crafted, others ... not so much. In any case, there is much more decency and solitude here than other places with a similar architecture, like Sâmbăta.
