Lovely and Historically Interesting Church

Just about any centuries-old European church is worth a visit, by this one is both attractive and historically interesting. Site of Croatia's third longest nave, the church is a combination of an attractive high altar and several nice side altars. But take the time to read the signs (helpfully in English) that explain the origin, destruction, and reconstruction of these sacred elements. See the holes in the wall meant to house explosives to effect the destruction of the entire building. See the reconstructed altars. Learn about age old paintings destroyed by dozens of bullet holes. For American or Western European tourists who too often take church attendance for granted, consider what you would think if your neighbors from different churches inflicted this pain and damage on you.

Important church and worth a visit
I was passing through on a road trip and decided to visit the church. It was very busy as it was the day of Assumption (August 15). The cloisters were impressive although seats would have been a bonus. The reconstruction is impressive although I did not do an intensive visit as a service was ongoing. Outside are reminders of the war when the church was mostly destroyed. On one photo it says "church after the terrible Serb aggression". As I have mentioned elsewhere, one cannot condone the Serbs' actions but people must try to move on and the churches - above all others - should aim for reconciliation.

A Catholic church in excellent condition
While it appears large from the outside, this is a relatively small and unadorned church. The wooden pews, the red roof tiles and the whitewashed walls give it a cozy, countryside church atmosphere. The main altar has a magnificent painting of the ascension of Jesus, with the apostles watching from below. Statues to the Virgin Mary and the apostles stud the walls The altar and pulpit are covered with marble and decorated with gold paint. A side altar and chapel are more modestly decorated , although the church does offer beautiful stained glass windows too.
