Park Prirode Papuk ("Papuk" Nature Park) - an undiscovered Croatian jewel.
The Croatian county of Slavonija is known for it's wide plains and wheatfields, but there IS a part of the county which doesn't fit that description: Pozeska Kotlina (the Pozega Valley) Dubbed "Vallis aurea" (the Golden valley) by the Roman conquerors, this valley is nestled between several hills and mountains in western part of the Slavonija county. The northernmost of these mountains is Mt. Papuk. Despite it's utterly unimposable height (less than 800 meters), the mountain of Papuk nevertheless offers a number of attractions for serious trekkers and amateurs alike - the Geological park Jankovac, waterfall "Skakavac" ("Grasshopper"), burial grounds and ancient ruins, mountain lodges...you name it. Rated as a "Nature Park", this marvel of Nature and History will satisfy the tastes of both casual weekend tourists (easy walks by lakes and short treks by the waterfall and historical sites) to mountaineering tracks and geological sites and parks for more serious mountaineers. Also, the mountain lodges offer meals and lodgings alike. Roads leading to the park are well marked and the directions are quite easy to read. If you're in the vicinity and have a day's time to spend, the Nature Park Papuk (Park Prirode Papuk) is well worth the visit.

Papuk is A LARGE area, not only Jankovac as you would assume if reading first reviews and description itself!
The park of a nature - PAPUK is wonderful green oasis. Go there, find you peace and leave it just the way you touched it... Hiking paths ARE VERY WELL MARKED, so if you know how to read them and you have map of that area you will be fine... Be quiet and enjoy... <3 Carry your food and water because there is only one restaurant (Jankovac) up there and at some points of the day (weekends especially) you will be served by JUST ONE MAN and you will wait LONG TIME... You have to have your own food if you want to go trough larger part of Papuk, in 1 or 2 days!! We were there for 2 days.
