Arrive using Train from Hong Kong Island! During weekdays it is less crowded than weekends. My suggestion is go by cable car and then you decide if you return by cable car or bus. Bus is cheaper but takes around 50 mins while cable it is only 35 mins. Arrive early! if you want to take pictures to big buddha with too many people. To go to Tai O, you can take the bus from the big buddha, just be aware, buses are small and sometimes there is a big line and the bus departs every hr. you can go by yourself or by tour. See more..

During our stay I fell in love with this island! The lifestyle here looks very different from the city’s hustle and bustle: relaxed, laid back, easy going. And it’s a very beautiful island with lots of hiking trails with amazing views, nice beaches, delicious food and friendly locals. No cars, just VVs (village vehicles) rustling about and carrying goods. We took a trail from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan fishing village on the other side climbing up for rewarding views and returning along the family path. In Sok Kwu Wan had a delicious lunch. The ferry service is very convenient, only 25 minutes to Central, very enjoyable. There are many expats living on this island, you can hear different languages spoken while wandering about. And the food options you get here range widely from very local Chinese, Indian, Malay, Mexican etc to having quite traditional English or American breakfast at Banyan cafe. See more..

If you’re looking for great food, a good beach, and lovely nature views. I went on a day trip to Cheung Chau island with some friends. We started off the day by boarding the bi-hourly ferry to Cheung Chau in Central just before noon. The ferry service alternates between the slow ferry (only AC if you pay about 15 HKD more for upper deck access) and the fast ferry (AC for whole deck). We arrived at Cheung Chau about 40 minutes later on the fast ferry, and immediately went to look for lunch. There were classic street food stalls, Japanese, cha chan teng, and more. We opted to get lunch at a small cha chan teng just next in-land from the main praya, and mango mochi for dessert at a stall next to the main praya. After lunch, we opted for a hike Southward towards Cheung Po Tsai cave. Although we didn’t visit the cave, we took an alternate route down to the Po Yue cove where there were lovely views and nature there. Lots of people were biking around the island, but my friends and I were all too afraid of the heat to go for a bike. We headed to the wonderful beach just before dinner for a splash. Even though it was a public holiday, the beach was still spacious enough for my friends and I to mill about and chill. For dinner, we went back to the island centre and ate at a restaurant on the main praya. Averaging 100 HKD per person, we had an 8-course meal of seafood, chicken, veggies, rice and beer. It was not extremely filling, however, but that just means we could go for street food again after dinner. We took a spacious slow ferry back to Central, opting for the upper deck with AC, tables, and comfortable lighting. See more..
