The bhagsunath temple is unbelievably quaint. The temple itself is tiny with a shivalinga inside and none of the usual fanfare. The locals come here and they have maintained the complex and retained the original structure of the temple. Set at the foothills of the mighty dhauladhar ranges, it has a flowing water channel and a swimming pool with changing areas, fountains and a tea shop. I'm not the spiritual type, though I do appreciate the whole nature of it. So the monks chanting in their hall was really amazing to see and all of us were thrilled. I have no idea what timetable they have, but I think it's one of those must-see events. Interestingly the monks here include a large number of quite young people and they are clearly easily distracted by tourists. I don't think they are quite as engaged in the rituals as the older ones. Baijnath (Vaidyanath) temple at Bainath near Palampur (HP) has the rare sight of a standing Nandi in addition to the usual sitting Nandi. People could be seen whispering their wishes in the ears of the standing Nandi. The temple is said to have been got constructed in1204 by two merchants. Legend has it that when, pleased by Ravan's tapasya, Mahadev granted him his wish of taking him to Lanka but in the form of a Shivling and with the rider that Ravan had to carry it without putting it down on the way, Brahma and Vishnu, worried that all the powers of Mahadev will go to Lanka, tricked Ravan into putting it down at this spot. The Shivling could not be moved from there and got installed as a Jyotirling. As such, Ravan too is revered there and neither is Ravan effigy burnt nor Vijaydashami celebrated in Baijnath. See more..

    Chail Gurudwara Sahib image
We are Sikh by religion and have visited so many Gurudwara's in India and abroad. We had never expected to find a City which was built around one and one that was so wonderfully beauitful. The place was built by then Maharaja of Patiala, when he first came to this little town. The place has Electricity Connection #1 but now since not too many people visit here, the Gurudwara Committes of India have neglected this place completely. There was a Granthi there, voluntarily living there, educated and suppoting his family there while he takes care of this little place of History and Spirituality. No one is supporting this place yet, it was touching to see him take care of this place like his own. In all, must see place and not to be missed and if you are lucky to Find Pritpal Ji there, you might even get to hear the whole story. See more..

We entered the complex as the only tourists and the temples were locked. We checked with the shop outside and he called the lama. The lama took us on a personal tour of the monastery and its temples though he could not answer many of our questions pertaining to religion & customs. The murals are breathtaking, colorful, vivid, decorative but most of them you would need to focus as lights are not permitted. No photography is permitted. We purchased some postcards and a poster from the monastery. Overall a must visit place. See more..
