Ceuta - overday trip from Algeciras on our own

We came to Ceuta over a day by ferry from Algeciras, this ferry connection takes about 1-1,5 hour. It is easy to walk from ferry terminal in Ceuta to the town, no need to have a transfer. In our 5 hours in Ceuta we could walk through the most of old town and see the most of sights, take a lunch break and make some shopping. Town is interesting to visit. And there is a number of excursions available to Morocco when in town.

    Fantastic fort with breath-taking views
In February 2023 we visited Ceuta whilst there we visited the fort Murallas Reales de Ceuta (Royal Walls). Entrance to the 16th century fortress was free. It was possible to walk around the walls to admire the cannons and the moat that divides the fort into two. The fort was very clean and appeared to be well cared for. From the top of the fort there were fantastic views of the beaches Playa de la Ribera and Playa del chorrillo), the mountain (Mont Hacho), the city and the port. Surrounding the fort was the picturesque city that has lots of historical monuments including Pedro de meneses 1st Count of Vila Real, Escultura homenaje al Almendrita, Hercules, Escultura de Enrique el Navegant, Escultura del Alcalde Sanchez Prados and so on. Within the city there were lots of points of interest including the Triumphal arch, the Museo de la Basilica Tardorromana, Fuerte del Desnarigado fort, the House of Dragons, the Cathedral, the Military Museum of the Legion, Puerto Califal Fort, Faro Punta Almin lighthouse, the Museo del Revellín and the Shrine of Our Lady of Africa. Other attractions include the Casino, Ceuta Park shopping Mall, Park San Amaro and the food market Mercado Central. We would recommend a visit to Ceuta because the city was spotlessly clean, the people were very welcoming and the city was beautiful and relaxing. Equally we would recommend visiting the Royal Walls because the views were breath-taking and the fort was very interesting

    Why Not Visit
If you are in the north of Morocco (Tanger / Tetouan), or the south of Spain I can recommend taking the time and making that extra effort to visit Ceuta. Whether you are interested in its’ history, designer shopping (there are always sales on), the duty free shops or just stopping by one of the many tapas bars, this small enclave has enough to keep you busy all day. Take a taxi to the lookout which has great views over the city and the Rif Mountains on one side and across the Straits to Gibraltar on the other. Wander back to the city centre via the park and the pebbled beach where the locals enjoy fishing. Within the city itself have a look at the massive El Conjuncto Monumental de las Muralla. The moat divides the massive walls and once the city of Ceuta and were built to protect the isthmus and peninsula of Almina, where the ancient city stood. You can take a tour with a guide or wander about yourself. For more history check out the Arab Baths and the city museum. If you need a rest I recommend the pretty square outside the post office; With its’ splashing fountain and calm atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to sip a coffee and watch the shoppers go by.
