Opera Națională București, Bucharest, Romania

4.5 (214 reviews) Spent Ranking #31 in Bucharest Operas

Impressive show of culture!

Unfortunately I did not get to see a production here but did get to view the inside. The inside is pretty much what you expect, theater style, red velvet and opera boxes lining the upper level. This is always stately, striking and moving. This is however just one of the four National Romanian Opera Houses. There is a huge green space in front, close to the road is a statue of George Enescu, conductor of the first production. Directly across from the steps is a statue of George Stephanescu the founder of the first Romanian Opera Company.

    Superb performance of "Rigoletto"!
We attended a performance of "Rigoletto" by the Romanian National Opera, and it was superb! The singing and acting were uniformly excellent, but the soprano who played Gilda, whose name I have forgotten but will look up so I can follow her, was sublime. The sets were well done: adequate and functional, and interesting enough but not so much that they diverted attention from the singing and acting. Truly remarkable are the ticket prices, which ranged from approximately $2.50 to $23.00 (USD). We were also impressed with the number of young people in attendance -- willingly! -- including many very well-behaved younger children. Just be warned: our casual American clothes were definitely out of place; most of the audience was very well-dressed, though no one looked at us askance, and everyone was extremely friendly.

    Value for money
The downside is the poor amenities inside (refreshments etc) but for the money, you see world class performance in an architecturally exciting auditorium. So pack your own nibbles and take a drink with you, but do go.
