-A gem, with a nearby twin
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
Small and impressive. A 9th century building, originally a palace then turned into a chapel. Guided tours, only in Spanish, are every half hour.. and then the guide closes the building and goes to the nearby church for another guided tour, Strange opening hours as well. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and well worth it. A car pack is a few hundred metres downhill.. no parking near the church itself. See more..

Laboral City of Culture is the result of a transformation project the Government of the Principality of Asturias undertook in 2001 in order to give new life to the building of the old Laboral University of Gijon. The project became a reality in March 2007: it was the birth of La Laboral City of Culture, an open and plural 21st Century cultural city, offering space for all kinds of shows and leisure proposals. The headquarters of the Principality of Asturias Broadcasting Corporation in the old Convent of Clarissa nuns, LABoral Art and Industrial Creation Centre, the Integrated Professional Training Centre, the Corinthian Patio housing the Shop, the Tower, the College of Dramatic Art and Professional Dance, the Church, the Cafe, the Theatre, the Auditorium and the Jovellanos University College, are some of t... From Taramundi, a great example of well-kept village from the asturian southwest area, it is worth to reach this place. Very interesting guided tours with live demos of a series of water-driven old engines. The restaurant serves reasonably good food at a good price with fantastic service. Try there “costillas” (ribs) and “tarta de la abuela” (homemade gramma’s pie). See more..

-The jewel of Austuria
Spent More than 3 hours Architectural Buildings
Wow, what a great hotel. Probably the best hotel I've been fortunate to stay in. This place oozes class and great taste, great service and great food. The rooms are large and airy, extremely comfortable beds and a modern bathroom complete the set. ( It even has its own winery). The sence of peace and tranquility in this old monastery was a welcome addition to our holiday in Northern Spain. It's a bit out-of-the-way but the surrounding area is beautiful and only a short drive into the spectacular mountains. The bonus of a pool and spa was nice (although only used the pool) and the courtyards were a lovely spot to sit out with a glass of wine in the late afternoon. Go on, treat yourself, you won't regret it! See more..

-A wonderful example of an early pre-romanesque church
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
This area (Oviedo in particular) has several excellent examples of pre-romanesque churches built in the 800s by the Asturian kings but this one is in the countryside, a lovely drive from or to Oviedo. It is attached to a monastery (where you can stay or eat). Just go into the reception/gift shop and pay the small fee (1.50 euros a person) and the receptionist will unlock the church, give you some history sheets in the appropriate language and leave you alone for a half hour or so to comtempate the remaining murals (very little) and the lovely space and light in the church. You can take all the photos you want--a plus. See more..

-Lovely village, unique collection of grain stores
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
This is a small village in a beautiful valley setting. There are lots of quirky older houses, many painted in the usual bright blues and yellows of the region, and a whole lot of the traditional local grain stores: buildings on stilts (some wooden, some stone) that were used to keep the grain out of reach of hungry animals, but which now seem to be used as household storage by their owners. Unique and fascinating buildings, nonetheless. See more..

See more..

See more..
