   From the Grouse Vista trail head (GPS coordinates 45.7218211334099, -122.26956713944674) it is a moderately difficult hike up to the top of Silver Star Mountain. Topping out at over 4000 feet, you are then rewarded with a 'top of the world' view that includes Hood, Adams, Rainier, Jefferson, St. Helen's, Baker and the Northern Cascades. This is the best mountaintop view in SW Washington. Hike is 6+ miles RT with 2000' elevation gain, with no facilities. Bring plenty of water and snacks, and you will be rewarded with a view to last a lifetime. Hike is rocky and steep at the start and at the finish, but moderate between. Grouse Vista Trail head is a one hour drive from Portland. Parking at the trail head requires a pass which must be purchased elsewhere, ahead of time. See more..

   I recently did some hiking (again) around the Moulton Falls/Bridge area. I always enjoy this hike (except for one day when there were two stupid idiots, motocross idiots, who thought they should barrel down the trail. Fortunately that was only once. But the real purpose of this review is to compliment the caretaker of the are AND the restrooms. The restrooms were pristine, cleaner than some airport restrooms. Kudos to Mr. Randal for doing a job way beyond expectations. See more..

   We were visiting Yacolt staying with family for 10 days and in the middle of the 10 days was my son-in-law Jason’s birthday. So off to the winery we went to celebrate. There was eight in our party and none of us chose wine, but sure enjoyed the various ciders and beer. We had a few appetizers and lots of thin crust perfectly prepared pizza! I think we got at least one of every type of pizza offered and they were quickly devoured. The taste was great and the crust just perfect the way I like it. There was even a band. Afterwards we drove over to Ilani Casino in La Center where we quickly donated our money to the slot machines. Fun evening overall and I’d make Moulton Falls Winery a regular stop if I lived here.    Although we did not have the steam engine the trip was worth the drive.We drove from Olympia about 2 hours,but the drive was beautiful along the river.I want to come back just to se the town and maybe tour the grist mill that was on the way.The train ride was beautiful,with a slow ride through the forest and over a bridge,and best of all a tunnel,my granddaughter was thrilled.There weren't too many people so we moved from the inside car to the outside one.We were in luck the rain held off until we were headed home.There is a stop on the trip back for a short hike to Yacolt Falls.Our boarding passes also included a wine tasting at the local winery.Check out their web site for special train rides.
