Things to do & places to visit in Wasatch Range, Utah, United States

Wasatch Range cover image
Stretching 160 miles through Utah, the Wasatch Range makes a rugged, glacial backdrop for the 85% of the state’s population living within 15 miles. Mount Nebo is highest at 11,928 feet, but the peaks around Alta and Park City are most popular. "The greatest snow on earth" falls on these spectacular slopes. Lone Peak’s granite outcrops provide top climbing. Canyons and valleys are loved by fly-fishermen and hikers. After all that adventure, retire to a hip restaurant or enticing hot tub in chic Park City.

  1. 5.0 Provo Canyon (209 reviews)
    - Experience Nature In Ideal Conditions
    Canyons
    Provo Canyon image
We live just a mile or so from the mouth of Provo Canyon, actually just a few feet from Provo Canyon Road, which turns into HWY 189 and will take you from the outskirts of the cities of Provo and Orem, to Sundance (turnoff), Midway (turnoff), Heber City, Park City, and beyond. So you should consider this review very much as coming from an insider, having lived in this community for over 35 years. Provo Canyon is spectacular! You can tent camp, or visit one of several fully developed campground/park areas featuring pavilions, BBQ pits, restrooms, and nature trails. You can hike, or you can bicycle or longboard or roller skate along the Provo River Trailway, fully paved and dutifully maintained. You can fish, or picnic along the shore and watch the fishermen haul in trout, bass, and other species in abundance. You can marvel at the 600 foot waterfall drop of Bridal Veil Falls, grab an antique narrow-gauge train ride on the Heber Valley Railway, or ride a motorcycle to the top of South Fork Canyon. You can launch your ski boat, fishing boat, paddle boat, or wind surfer on Deer Creek Reservoir, or in the Winter months, drill a hole in the ice, and catch a fish. I could go on and on. If you are visiting Utah County (just 30 minutes South of Salt Lake City off Interstate 15), and you have a day or more to enjoy this natural wonderland, we welcome your visit to our hidden gem, Provo Canyon. It is rarely crowded (except perhaps on major Summertime holidays), almost always accessible (unless in the middle of a snow storm, which does happen!), and stunningly beautiful all year long and in any Season. 7. 4.5 Alta Ski Area (650 reviews)
    - A Classic
Sunday: Spent More than 3 hours Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Alta Ski Area image
Alta continues to be a classic and classy place to ski. A very nice variety of terrain with short to non-existent lift lines and no snow boarders. The black runs are a pleasure to ski for a couple pushing 60 but remain challenging. They are doing an outstanding job of grooming. There had been practically no new snow for 2+ weeks but the runs were still in excellent shape on a good base (85+ inches). We got a little bit of snow while there (3 inches on night and 1-2 inches another) and they kept great care of it. Alta continues to be a great ski destination. See more..

    Snowbird image
snowbird is a fantastic place for families to ski together! the kids age 9,11 both advanced-intermediate skiers spent most of their time at Alta. They loved having the option of another ski hill just 10 min away by public bus. At snowbird, we had great food, and took the tram to the top. Kid's ski passes got them on the tram and adults bought tram tickets $28. Totally worth it! The only issue with Snowbird (and Alta) is that the pass is variable due to weather. When planning your trip make sure that you have some kind of trip insurance incase you get stuck in the canyon and miss your flight!! See more..

  11. 4.5 Bridal Veil Falls (515 reviews)
    - Stretch Your Legs for a Quick Look
    Waterfalls
    Bridal Veil Falls image
As of 10/2021, there is construction at the falls - it looks like it will be going through the end of the year. Still nice to see, but it does impact the visit as an FYI. The falls are a nice side trip from driving. It’s a quick trip from the car from either the viewpoint or from the lower area where you can hike more. The hike up to the falls is hard and risky without proper footwear and probably hiking poles. Nonetheless, you can see and enjoy the falls without much effort. See more..

    Guardsman Pass Scenic Backway image
This was a beautiful Hike to Bloods Lake. Many wild flowers and gorgeous viewpoints for pictures. We had a family of 5, (10,11,& 15) they all loved it. It's not too long & is only a little difficult when you are getting closer to the lake. They lake is picturesque. You can take swimsuits & take a swim in the very cool water. There is a rope swing at one end. It is a busier hike, but it didn't bother us at all. We saw people hiking with inflatable paddle boards (great idea!). Great spot to spend an afternoon or have a picnic. All ages here- toddlers to adults. We will go again :) See more..
