If you want to get an idea of what life and work was like in the 18th and 19th century is rural New Jersey, this is the place. Located just north of Stockton along the Delaware River, people lived and worked in the grist mill, lumber or linseed oil mill as well as other commercial businesses on the site. John Prall developed the property for operation of the mills as well as fisheries in the Delaware River. His family and staff lived in one of the 10 buildings on the property that has been restored and preserved by concerned citizens of the area. It is also on the National Registry of Historic Homes. The property is currently home to art shows, corporate event, fundraisers and weddings. We were only able to visit the Grist Mill which is the main building on the site. The other buildings were not open to the public we assume because of COVID. It is extremely well preserved and provides an education in the operation of a grist mill (see photos). We plan set up a group tour with some friends in the Spring to see and learn more about the property and visit the other buildings. See more..

The Painters’ Collective Art Colony Gallery is what I call Stockton’s hidden gem. The gallery is housed in a classic old stone building located on Route 29 just north of Stockton at the Prallsville Mill. The Painters’ Collective is a group of talented painters comprising of local artists from the Delaware River Valley. This gallery, which showcases many of the artist’s paintings, is open Saturday and Sundays from 12 to 4. My wife and I enjoyed seen the beautiful works of art this past weekend. See more..

    Green Sergeant Covered Bridge image
Constructed in 1872, Green Sergeant is the only remaining, fully functioning covered bridge in New Jersey. It's a real treasure. The bridge was built to protect the wooden bridge from rot that would be caused by wetness from rain and snow landing on the bridge. Later, when wooden bridges were replaced by metal bridges, they did not need to be covered. As a result, the Green Sergeant was torn down. However, in 1961, a group of concerned citizens petitioned the State of New Jersey to rebuild the covered bridge that we see here today. I discovered the bridge while taking a ride through the beautiful Hunterdon County countryside on a clear fall day. Located just down a country road from Sergeantsville, it is officially listed as located in Stockton. There is nothing much around so you can pull over and explore the bridge. See more..
