Things to do & places to visit in St. George, Utah, United States

St. George cover image
St. George is central to some of the most dramatic natural beauty in the American West, from the Mojave Desert to Zion National Park and the Pine Valley Mountains. While its summers are hot, St. George's mild and largely snow-free winters make it popular with golfers, hikers and bikers. In fact, Brigham Young wintered here – his home in town is open to the public.

  1. 5.0 Red Hills Desert Garden (405 reviews)
    - Well worth a visit.
    Sunday: 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Parks • Gardens
    Red Hills Desert Garden image
I used to manage garden centers, as well as teach edible wild plant classes, so seeing gardens across the country is something I enjoy doing. If you enjoy gardens too, do not miss this one. Unbelievably, it's free! It is laid out thoughtfully. Plants are grouped, more or less, by type. When one thinks of desert gardens, one might think boring plants that aren't that pretty. But they did a great job highlighting the beauty of desert plants. Well worth a visit. We went just before sunset, so the heat of the day was gone, and there was a slight breeze. I recommend either this time of day or early in the day to avoid heat. They are open daily 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. See more..

    Paragon Adventures image
This is was a great trip for our family of 7 with kids ages 6-16. Marlene and Jamie were knowledgeable and patient guides, helping our kids overcome their fears and learn to repel. They were especially good with my 6 year old and by the end of the trip he was bragging about how he was going to be a rock climber when he grows up. Marlene and Jamie also knew a lot about the area and shared little gems about the plants, animals and geography of southern Utah. It was a memorable trip and I'd book with them again when visiting that part of of the world. See more..

Thunder Junction All Abilities Park image
Definitely worth a stop! Our 9 and 12 year old enjoyed it and I think it's targeted mostly for the younger crowd. The equipment was well kept, ranged from toddler to big kid climbing wall. The "splash pad" as so refreshing. We would highly recommend if you are trying to find something fun for the kids with water involved as well. There is a covered pavilion where you could bring a picnic lunch. Highly recommend! See more..

    Pioneer Park image
Beautiful vistas and fun climbing over red rocks abound here. There were multiple slots, holes in rocks and cave like places to explore and take photos of. This was my 2nd time here, so not quite as magical and amazing as the 1st. The 1st time we came here was with our kids and grandkids - keep an eye on those as falls and accidents are possible if you're not careful. See more..

I just took the tour solo on Friday. I wish I remember the gentleman’s name who gave me the tour. I’m not Mormon so I didn’t understand a couple things but my guide took So much time explaining everything. It was such an interesting tour and an amazing property. It was free and they wouldn’t even accept a donation. I would definitely recommend this. See more..

  14. 4.5 Jacob Hamlin Home (168 reviews)
    - A MUST SEE site when visiting St. George
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Jacob Hamlin Home image
This is such an interesting frontier home of Jacob Hamblin, missionary and peacemaker to the Indians, his 2 wives, and their 11+ children. The big stone house was a mission home and family home. Don't miss the large great room upstairs, where the wives and children would have spent a majority of their time sewing, spinning, weaving, cooking, teaching. I love learning about Jacob's 4 wives. He only ever had 2 at a time though. See more..

We happened to be in the area and saw this show up on the map, and felt it was worth the drive to check out. It really was. We learnt so much about the history of this town and the plight faced by the Baker Fancher wagon train. The memorial site is really well kept, is informative and evokes a peaceful atmosphere. We went as a couple but this would be really interesting for families. See more..

    - fantastic park!
    Parks
    Town Square Park image
We were so happy to find this park while on a roadtrip. There were plenty of grassy areas in the shade for our picnic. The splash pad was awesome! The main area was pretty crowded but we were able to find a space at the edge where we could keep our distance from other people. The carousel is closed from 1-5pm (probably because of the heat?) so we didn't ride it. It only costs a dollar. We also enjoyed the fun sculptures throughout the park. Highly recommended! See more..
  18. 4.5 Red Cliffs National Conservation Area (106 reviews)
    - Favorite Hike
Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
Red Cliffs National Conservation Area image
2 hikes in 1. First see the dinosaur prints. This is a very short hike past the campers...do it while you have energy. Great views, flowers, and of course pre-historic prints. What more could you want? Except there's a lot more! Retrace your steps. Use the restrooms while you have the chance! Then follow the trail into the canyon. It's so beautiful! Towering red cliffs. A stream, if you are lucky. It might be dry. But still, the stream bed with trees and growth, looking very cool when it's hot out. Shade is so nice! Hike back to the falls. They might be dry. Try and go right after a rain. You can hike up to the cave and look for Indian petroglyphs. We couldn't find them, but it was cool. This place is awesome. Get a picture! One of the most amazing views ever looking thru the canyon going and coming. See more..

  21. 4.5 Bloomington Petroglyph Park (64 reviews)
    - Petroglyphs in St George city limits
    State Parks
    Bloomington Petroglyph Park image
This is kind of amazing as you drive through a neighborhood to get here and the site is surrounded by homes. Petroglyphs can date back 12,000 years and these are very dated as some are deep and quite warn. The site is not gated off, so you can actually be up close and personal with a something created literally thousands of years ago. There are no facilities here, just some large boulders and a couple of benches to sit on and contemplate what you are seeing. This is really a find, as very few folks even know it exists. Take the time to visit this remarkable site and look back in time. See more..
  22. 4.5 Tonaquint Nature Center (43 reviews)
    - Peaceful
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Educational sites
    Tonaquint Nature Center image
Peaceful spot just off the Santa Clara river trail. Pond with ducks and swans. You can feed the ducks from the deck area or near the waters edge. Short trails will take you to benches or the amphitheater where you can enjoy the solitude and watch for the many small birds in the tress and bushes. It appears they have activities for families at the Nature Center often...I'm sure less peaceful during those activities. See more..

  26. 4.5 Cottonwood Cove Park (13 reviews)
    - Local kids call it the "Exercise Park"
Spent 1-2 hours Parks • Playgrounds
    Cottonwood Cove Park image
All kids are going to get some exercise here. There are so many unique play experiences here--things to bounce, swing, slide, and climb on. There is a rock wall for kids & teens. This is not the best park for those under 5--there is a play area for them but my little ones wouldn't just stay there and the older kid play structure has a VERY high slide and scary drop offs that aren't safe for little ones. So take the kids--its fun--but plan to keep a good eye on them. It can also get very busy. See more..
