  6. 4.5 North Cascades National Park Service Complex (8 reviews)
    - Very Spectacular Drive
    Visitor Centers
When we went to drive the North Cascades Scenic Highway we didn't realized that ALL the Ranger Stations and Facilities were closed, which was disappointing. I was looking forward to stamping my National Parks Passport. The weather wasn't that great but we had some awesome trail hikes. The Trail of the Cedars was beautiful and calming. I was really happy to find a steam engine on display at Newhalem. I didn't realize it was a Seattle City Light Railway steam engine and that it was in very good display condition. I liked how pieces of the power plant were used as display items like the flower planter. The Diablo Lake overlook was spectacular, but a bit windy. Big white caps on the lake this trip! The Diablo Dam road looks like it could get real hard to get back and forth if there is a lot of traffic since it's a one way road. Happy Creek nature trail is also is a nice like jaunt. The weather turned so we were done with hiking for the day. it was a very nice drive into Winthrop. See more..

Our family made the most of a short Summer vacation by staying local and making reservations at the North Cascades Institute for one night at BASE Camp, provided our dinner, then we woke up to breakfast as well. Following breakfast we caught the Skagit Tour on Lake Diablo. No hassels or worries, we just walked to the dock from NCI. Highly recommend you make ADVANCE reservations, as both venues fill up quickly. See more..
