I was on vacation in the area and found online that this shop had locally grown, dyed and spun wool. The stop was well worth it. The employee working was very helpful and interesting. She told us about the artists who had work for sale in the shop. In addition to yarn, there were kits, hand made buttons and finished products for sale. I wasn't able to stay for a class since we were on a short vacation but if I lived nearby I would definitely participate. See more..

Needed chocolate for Valentine's Day so stopped in this little shop. They had ten or twelve flavors of truffles in addition to chocolate bars, nonparallels, etc. I explained my preferences and the sales person knew exactly what to give me. There was a pause before he started filling the tray and I realized he was placing little preprinted labels on the box liner to provide the index before he started picking the selections! The truffles are very good: smooth delicious dark chocolate with just enough flavoring to differentiate them without fighting or overwhelming the chocolate. For example, the espresso truffle tastes like eating an espresso bean while the coffee liqueur smoother, less aggressive flavor. Great place for dark chocolate truffles. I hiked the Deer Leap Trail to Deer Leap Overlook in July. The trail begins at the top of the pass on US 4. The trail is rough with lots of tree roots and boulders. The trees blocked the wind which in conjunction with the humidity made it stifling. Make sure to bring plenty of fluids as you will lose a lot. The trail has an almost constant upgrade. But the view from the top was spectacular! There was a cool breeze up there on the exposed rock outcropping. I sat and enjoyed the view for a while. It is a great hike and we’ll worth the effort! Park in front of the arena and head over to the trails at Pine Hill Park at the end of the parking lot. Once you're in the trail system there are no restrooms or water, so plan accordingly. We enjoyed three hours of hiking and went to the pond. You could spend an entire day here. There are enormous rocks, tiny orange lizards, and some nice views in the paths of the power lines. I just love Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center, for this unique and amazing structure we have right here in Rutland, when so many others have to travel for leagues and schools. I've been coming here for a while, many years, with my . Owner Steve always surprises me with his attention, probably a carry-over from his guiding work. He's patient and knowledgeable, and he can really teach you the skill you need. Steve's also a great instructor with a wealth of outdoor experience. Wonderfeet is a great little place to bring young children. In its new location, activity centers have been added. There is a play diner with "pizza oven" for kids to play chef and learn to order and pay for food. A photosensitive wall has been added... kids can "draw" on the walls with flashlights. They are expanding and as of now they have the following: a creative center for drawing and crafts; build your own log cabin; a gravity track for wooden balls; a play farmers market to shop; a kinetic sand table; a toddlers-only play area; an over-sized styro-foam tinker-toy area. In the 15 or so times we've been there, we have yet to see a bored child... our boy loves it. And it is great when visiting town and especially in bad weather. Vermont has several wonderful arts centers and the Chaffee is one of them. With 2 locations in Rutland (a beautiful mansion on Main street (rt 7) and a smaller (newer) location in downtown Rutland), be sure to check them both out. The large exhibits change on a rotating schedule and there are always smaller exhibits in the down town location. They also offer a variety of classes and events. One of the most amazing things about this organization is that all of their exhibits are open to the public and free. They operate based on a small membership base and voluntary donations at the door. They don't promote this information, so it could be easy to miss. This is my 3rd visit this year to this local bar. It sits on the main street of our town, near a couple of restaurants. The bartender my last two visits was Ben. He is friendly, and I have to say, quite easy on the eyes too. It looks like they have quite a few regular patrons. There's a pool table and darts to enjoy while downing a beer or two!
