  2. 5.0 James H Webb Cabin (2 reviews)
    - Rare example of Cabin lived in, in the time of Harriet Tubman

    James H Webb Cabin image
The James Webb cabin, as described by the Caroline County website, is a one-room home, with its “potato hole,” open fireplace, and loft accessed by a crude ladder, and was built of materials found nearby. It was built by a free black man around 1852 for his enslaved wife and children. This is an incredible window into an earlier world where the poor built their homes by hand, and the entire family lived in a space smaller than some modern bathrooms. If you can, access the Harriet Tubman audio guide to hear the "owners" tell their story. We arrived on a weekday, and the building was open to view. Like the Linchester Mill, it showed evidence of a great amount of volunteer labor to restore it to its current form. For decades I have driven down route 16 (Harmony Road) between Denton and Preston, but have never been down grove before. Coming from Harmony, its on your left somewhat between Harmony and Bethlehem Road. It is very moving to visit. See more..

    - Lovely group of historic mill buildings

    Linchester Mill Campus image
We saw the sign on the road and turned in, not knowing what to expect. This is a campus of several historic mill buildings dating from the 1840s. It includes the old post office, the mill foreman's building and a few others. You can go inside some but not all of the buildings, but I found it interesting and enjoyable. A lovely area to enjoy a picnic. See more..
