    Quarry Lake image
I was surprised to learn there was a lake within the beltway, but an appointment brought me to the area and I walked over from the nearby shops and offices to view the gorgeous clear aquamarine lake. True to the name Quarry Lake, one could see the huge Rick banks on the opposite side. The Lake is said to be quite deep, around 500 feet. The are benches, and several people were eating their lunch. A plaque explans that the Quarry started in the mid 1800s to produce rocks needed to develop Baltimore. The lake is a centerpiece of the nearby residential and commercial development. There is plenty 8f parking at the nearby shopping center. See more..

  4. 4.0 Fort Garrison (1 review)
    - A colonial fort built on the frontier, now part of suburbia
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Fort Garrison image
Fort Garrison is hidden in a suburban cul-de-sac in northwest Baltimore County between Stevenson and Pikesville. Although when it was built between 1693 and 1695, it was located in a large forest nine miles from the nearest colonial settlements. It now appears on a small lot among 20th-century subdivision homes. The fort was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Only street parking is available. That location was considered "frontier" at the time when rangers were posted and patrolled the area. The rectangular fieldstone building, according to the country’s parks department who fortunately restored the property, is the only original stone blockhouse still standing in Maryland. One can see the stonework on the second story is different, and as it happens, this level was added in the early 19th century. The commander's house next door still exists as a private home today. It is constructed with the same stone. Of interest, there is little to identify the site besides a small plaque on a stone in the front yard and a small sign attached above the street sign for Garrison Farms Court. The addition of an educational poster, as seen at other historic sites, would be appreciated. See more..
