    Pecos National Historical Park image
Pecos National Historical Park commemorates thousands of years of human travel through the area. This includes hundreds of years of human habitation, such as Pecos Pueblo and the Spanish Mission Church. The Santa Fe Trail came through the park, as did the original path of Route 66. The Civil War brought the Battle of Glorieta Pass here, where Confederate ambitions for the Southwest stopped. The Forked Lightning Ranch boasted Northern New Mexico dude ranching and the home of Tex Austin, E.E. "Buddy" Fogelson, and Greer Garson. Whatever your interest in New Mexico, from archeology to modern rodeos, Pecos National Historical Park is connected! See more..

    Glorietta Battlefield image
After you visit Pecos National Historical Park, ask the rangers for directions and the gate combination and head up the a bit. The self guided walking tour doesn't take real long. Read the detail boards and learn about the two day called the Gettysburg of the West and basically halted the Confederacy's design to capture the mineral areas of NM & CO. It is not well known, I'm one who didn't know of it until I started planning my Route 66 trip. After you finish up inside, go out to the Monuments located on Route 50 on the way to I25. See more..
  5. 4.0 Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey (1 review)
    - Nice Retreat
    Religious Sites
While traveling through the area, we were looking for accommodations in the Pecos, NM area. As a child, with my family, we had visited the Monastery. I thought that maybe they might offer accommodations for one night. Sure enough. First, the location. The Monastery is located just beyond the small town of Pecos, NM. It's in a beautiful area near the forest and near the Pecos River. The Monastery. The complex caters to groups seeking a venue and individuals seeking a refuge. It's a rambling complex with a central building containing their gift shop, lobby, dining hall and chapel. There's a wing with motel-type rooms. To one side there are living quarters for the religious community. Off the other way is a building for meetings and activities. While the Monastery focuses on groups and personal retreats, it does accommodate one night stays for those (like us) on the way through. With the room rate are a simple breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining hall. Our room was simple with a queen bed, bed table (one), side rocking chair, small, like very small bathroom. There was a sink in the room. The room is well maintained and clean. If passing through, we'd recommend considering staying at the Monastery. See more..
