  4. 5.0 Coastal Rail Trail (6 reviews)
    - Still the best way to travel between O'side and Carlsbad
    Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
    Coastal Rail Trail image
From Carlsbad Inn to the Oceanside Pier, the coastal rail trail makes its way along a protected stretch of roadway, some neighborhoods, and a formal, well marked trail. It's only about a 3 mile walk and there's always the train to take back if the round trip walk is too long. There are plans to extend the trail all the way to San Diego but that hasn't come to fruition at this time. Sometimes the wheels of progress turn slowly. Walking this trail and its environs really gives a good opportunity to stop and admire flowers, appreciate some of the local flavor, and create memories. See more..

    Trams
    COASTER image
Great way to travel between Oceanside and San Diego. Trip was quick, 1 hour and train ride was smooth and comfortable. Several stops along the route where you can get off the train and spend time and then catch the next train. The trains run on time so be there or wait for the next one. The only downside and word of caution…….when you buy your ticket you must travel that day, you can’t buy a ticket for say a ride 2 days from now. See more..

    Oceanside Sunset Market image
We stumbled on this ... only open Thursdays and was closed that evening due to rain. But it was great. Artisans in the front, food in the back. Best was Baba Food with a great assortment of hummus, pita, dips, and lots of free samples. And the man running the booth was a riot.... he said the Irish invented hummus (we know that's not true but we laughed a lot). We bought a bunch. Fabulous strawberries and produce. See more..

    Flea & Street Markets
    Oceanside Farmer's Market image
We visited the evening version (the morning version is more of a traditional "Farmer's Market") and had a great time roaming around and sampling great food! This had a carnival-like atmosphere but was very clean and well-organized. There were many crafts, artwork, jewelry and food galore, along with music & entertainment! I wished I remembered the name of the seafood place that had the BEST fish taco's I've ever had, no kidding! See more..
  12. 4.5 Oceanside Strand (128 reviews)
    - Walking the beach is good for your soul
Spent 1-2 hours Beaches • Parks
    Oceanside Strand image
We visited many of the beaches along the coast and Oceanside is the most beautiful, especially for walking. The walkway along the strand is paved but step off the sidewalk and walk along the beach for the best view. The sand was firm enough to walk with gym shoes and there are fewer stones to dodge than at Encinitas Beach. One of the best times of day is in the morning when the sunlight hits the sand and makes it shimmer. But in the evening, the sunsets can be spectacular! See more..

    Oceanside Harbor Village image
We just wanted a nice place to have drinks and snacks. We parked in the free 2 hour parking and had a beer and fish tacos at the Lighthouse Oyster Bar & Grill. Then we drove 2 blocks to one of only 6 metered parking spots on the beach to walk the shore a bit. Back 2 blocks to the free parking again for happy hour at Rockin’ Baja Lobster where we got margaritas and free chips and salsa bar. Simply a great restful afternoon! See more..
  15. 4.5 Oceanside Municipal Marina (49 reviews)
    - No sounds and sounds
    Spent 1-2 hours Marinas
    Oceanside Municipal Marina image
This is a very nice harbor not to big not to small. It’s very peaceful when you’re walking along the sidewalk. You can start at the lighthouse and go all the way around to the Jolly Rogers. Why I called the title no sounds and sounds. Harbor representing tranquility of not so much noise, on the other side of Marina Del Mar is the Splish flash waves of the ocean which is noticeably louder. I Absolutely enjoy both sides hands-down. You will see a lot of charter type boats and other recreational ocean activities to rent. There’s a number of very good restaurants along the sidewalk as well. You can charter a boat full day half-day nighttime whatever your pleasure is. Oh by the way, there’s a residence seal in the harbor definitely can hear him. At night time the lighthouse light rotates around which gives it some ambience as it reflects in the water. See more..
  16. 4.5 Oceanside Public Library (37 reviews)
    - A Very Nice "Friends Bookstore"
    Spent 1-2 hours Libraries
    Oceanside Public Library image
The exterior setting of this Library is quite extraordinary........fountains and pools. The interior is quite nice too. As out-of-towners, we went there with one purpose: to visit the "Friends Bookstore." The bookstore was well stocked and very well organized. The book prices were very reasonable. The Friend on duty was very helpful. See more..
  17. 4.5 Prince of Peace Abbey (29 reviews)
    - Spectacular Church, Beautiful Grounds
Friday: 5:30 AM - 9:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Prince of Peace Abbey image
The Church, I would say, is "modern." Nothing negative implied here. Lots of wood....beautiful. The grounds are well maintained and nicely landscaped. I sat in the cemetery for a while......enjoyed the sounds of the birds and the sight of a beautiful hummingbird. I don't want to overuse the word, "peaceful," so I'll just say that, in a word, this place is tranquil. See more..
  18. 4.5 North County Model Railroad Society (21 reviews)
    - Model trains - great time!
    Friday: Speciality Museums
North County Model Railroad Society image
This is a small local gem in Oceanside. We go here often with the grandkids. First we let the kids drive the trains, round and round. Then we walk around the large room with the actual model of North County San Diego layout. The design is authentic and crafted with superb detail and skill. Gives us the opportunity to discuss various topics with the kids; history, transportation, geography, job choices, travel, the list is endless. Then BACK to the kids room so they can drive the trains again. Definitely a GO TO destination for a great time. See more..
  19. 4.5 Breakwater Way Beach (9 reviews)
    - North Strand beach area
    Spent 1-2 hours Beaches
    Breakwater Way Beach image
Our week stay on the Strand was located very near this beach and the sunset views were off-the-charts awesome. We also liked the activity in the beach area and the gymnast on the bouncy cords who flew high in the air, landing, rebounding, and thrilling the crowds. This north Strand part of the beach has perhaps the widest expanse of sand; the South Strand direction of the beach is prone to heavy storm surges that drag out much of the sand. Although farther from the Pier and the concession opportunities to grab a snack, this part of the beach has lots of picnic tables and, of course, that really big and clean restroom facility. Across from the beach (and on the Strand) there are some quirky little cottages which give Oceanside its own character. See more..

  23. 4.0 Guajome County Park (84 reviews)
    - Super Park
    Parks
    Guajome County Park image
Guajome is for the most park and RV and camping spot, but you can stop there for a bit just to enjoy the park area. It is super nice. After having had a terrible experience at a Denny's in Oceanside, I had to use a restroom so we stopped. It was a typical camp ground bathroom. It was clean and stocked. The park has lots of places to walk and hike. Beware if poison ivy and oak. They try to mark it, but can't catch it all. The walk areas are lovely with lots of beautiful tree and shade. It really looks like you left the City. They also have a duck pond. Some would call it a lake, but it really is just a duck pond. It is ever so cute with lots of ducks and geese and my grandson loved it. We were just able to relax for a bit and we had a great time. See more..

San Luis Rey River Trail image
Yes, there are homeless. Part of society now. Bummer. BUT, if you keep eyes on the natural beauty, birds and smiling families - and maintain a compassionate heart, it’s a lovely ride filled w natural beauty. Me and hubby go every weekend for years now - we feel perfectly safe. We trek over to harbor to enjoy seals or down to strand to watch surfers. We love it!! See more..
  25. 4.0 Buena Vista Audubon Society & Nature Center (38 reviews)
    - Excellent center, limited lagoon experience
Friday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas
Buena Vista Audubon Society & Nature Center image
The center's exhibits are very well done and the volunteers make every visitor welcome. Birders visiting the area can learn a great deal here about what to find and where to go in San Diego County. The degraded condition of the lagoon, with the loss of flow from the ocean and the choking of the system with the reeds should be a lesson brought to the attention of all who go there as an example of how things go awry when natural systems are ignored in the name of progress. The center is closed on Sundays. See more..
  26. 4.0 Buccaneer Park (31 reviews)
    - Such a nice park in a perfect setting
Spent 1-2 hours Parks • Playgrounds
    Buccaneer Park image
Directly across Pacific Street is a great beach area but on the park side of the street, there is much to do and see. The play equipment is well maintained and has a great variety of activities, the cafe in front of the park is a small cafe to grab a bit and sit at the park to eat. It is not generally open in the winter months. On the side of the park is a creek (Loma Alta Creek Marshlands) which has a major bird population. The creek makes its way under a small bridge and out into the ocean across the street. Along the creek, the water weaves among rocks and meanders along, very restful. There is a big white sign on the corner, under the street signs, that identifies this park. See more..

  29. 4.0 Legacy Brewing Company (11 reviews)
    - Newly found
    Breweries
    Legacy Brewing Company image
I live nearby and have passed this place thousands of times without knowing they were there. They have a new sign facing Hwy 76 so it is easy to see now. Right off the 76 on Airport Road. Legacy is a good craft brewery in north SD county. I like their line up of brews a lot. We spent a very pleasant afternoon tasting. The Chesty Irish Red is delightful. The 3 IPA's I sampled were all excellent but my favorite was the Hop of 76 IPA. I recommend anyone one looking to try some great craft brews to find them and enjoy their brewery. The staff is very helpful with excellent service. A brewery bus tour arrived while we were there but our server, Brittany, made sure to keep an eye on us to see what we wanted to sample next while hustling to take care of the tour group. See more..
