    Deciduous Brewing Company image
Between the various types of beer and the matching light fare to pair up with your favorite style brew, this place should be a stopover if you’re passing through Newmarket. The owners and staff are very warm, welcoming, and as nice a group as you’ll meet. Just be prepared to leave with a growler as you’ll want to take a taste - or two - of Deciduous with you, and return again soon. See more..
  3. 4.0 Heron Point Sanctuary (2 reviews)
    - EASY TREK IN THE WOODS ON BOARDWALKS
    Scenic Walking Areas
    Heron Point Sanctuary image
With sun coming out from behind the clouds periodically, I decided to get a look at Heron Point Sanctuary and try to get some photos. I found that the trail was mostly boardwalk with stairs up and down. In most places along the trail, it would be a few steps up and then a few steps down further along. No rough terrain to navigate. Without the boardwalk, it would have been very rough terrain on the side of a hill. Don't be intimidated by the steep flight of stairs down to the river from the observation deck at the beginning. The trail itself doesn't have any steep ups or downs like that. It was a pleasant trek in the woods with a few views of the Lamprey River and a waterfall created by the Macallen Dam. I rate Heron Point Sanctuary at 4.0 and can recommend a visit. The reason for the delay in submitting this review was due to a months-long loss of my ability to post photos with my reviews. 4. 4.0 Lubberland Creek Preserve (2 reviews)
    - Love it
    Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
Lubberland Creek is a wonderful place to explore. There are turtles, ducks, geese, snakes, herons, beaver dams, etc. Buggy in spring, of course, just wear bug dope and a bug net. The trail also crosses the road near the parking area, which has a lovely view of the bay area. See more..
  5. 4.0 Rockingham Country Club (1 review)
    - A good outing of golf, and not too challenging
Sunday: 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Golf Courses
Played nine holes during a summer weekday. Price was reasonable, and we had no wait to tee off. Course was a bit damp from a very rainy spring and early summer, so we will be sure to return in the fall. Staff was very helpful, and the people we met on the course were very friendly. Even one of the home owners near the 8th green came over to chat. Will be moving to Exeter within a year, and may consider joining the course and become a member. See more..
  6. 4.0 St. Mary Church (1 review)
    - WHITE CLAPBOARD GOTHIC REVIVAL-STYLE CHURCH
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
    St. Mary Church image
After having lunch at Gepetto’s Pizza, I headed up Gerry Avenue to Main Street. St. Mary Church was straight ahead. Several features of the church’s architecture caught my attention. I went over for a closer look at the details. There were several characteristics of the Gothic Revival style. The influence was very obvious from the tall narrow windows with pointed arches. The triple-arched window with a round window inset above the main entrance reflected a strong Gothic influence. I saw two nice Trinity Windows above both doorways. The tower and larger-then-usual enclosed belfry had some nice decorative carpentry. Just below the bottom of the belfry, there were five crosses. That was something I hadn’t seen before. Not a lot is known about the church building’s history which seem to start in 1878 when Newmarket organized as a separate parish from Exeter. The church building is well preserved. St. Mary Church is included in the Newmarket Historic District listing on te National Register of Historic Places. I rate the architecture of St. Mary Church at 4.25 and can recommend stopping by for a look. 7. 4.0 Macallen Dam On Lamprey River (1 review)
    - SCENIC DAM WITH BRIDGE AS A VIEWING PLATFORM
    Spent < 1 hour Dams
Macallen Dam On Lamprey River image
I first saw the Macallen Dam and the waterfall it creates from the Heron Point Sanctuary downstream and on the other side of the Lamprey River. It took awhile to figure out how to get to it. The best view is up close on a pedestrian bridge over the Lamprey River that starts on the NW side of the Chinburg Properties at 3 Penstock Way. That vantage point is just perfect to get a very good look at the dam and its large spillway, plus the fish ladder. On my visit to its actual location, the region had been experiencing a severe drought for several months; but, despite the drought the river water was flowing over dam at a good rate. Although the waterfall created by the dam doesn’t have a long drop, it has significant width, and the spillway is one of the largest I’ve even seen. There is also a fish ladder for migrating river herring that go upriver. This is a scenic spot as it’s in the Newmarket Historic District where all the old mill buildings are. To get there, look for Penstock Way diagonally across from the Newmarket Public Library. It’s the narrow roadway that comes into Main Street at about a 45 degree angle. It would be best to park on Main Street and then walk down Penstock Way as the only spaces I saw down there were numbered which meant that they were reserved for tenants of the buildings. I rate Macallen Dam On Lamprey River at 4.50 and highly recommend a visit when in Newmarket. 9. 4.0 Newmarket Community Church (1 review)
    - HISTORIC CHURCH WITH AN UNUSUAL FINIAL
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Newmarket Community Church image
Newmarket Community Church has an interesting history. It was constructed in 1828 as the First Congregation Church. Since then, there have been several additions. The church steeple was added in 1840. In 1855, this Newmarket landmark underwent a major construction project. The building was raised, and Fellowship Hall was built underneath. Later in 1855, the organ was installed in the larger sanctuary. The town clock on the steeple has a story of its own. In 1871, Civil War veteran John Palmer decided that the town needed a clock. It happened to coincide with plans for change to the steeple. He raised $425.00 through a subscription book. In 1872, the clock was installed and operating for the church rededication service. There is an object that looks like a bowling pin atop the steeple. It is actually just an unusual architectural finial. Over the years, three faiths were consolidated into today’s Newmarket Community Church: the United Church of Christ, the United Methodist Church, and the American Baptist Church. Initially, the church appears to be of a very simple design; but, when one looks closer, different details begin to stand out. Whenever I pass this church, I admire some aspect of the detailed carpentry on the front – particularly around and above the center entrance of the church. I also like the double-arched Gothic windows, the dentil carving under the eaves, and the unique finial. For its historic importance to Newmarket and the design aesthetics, I rate the Newmarket Community Church at 4.50 and recommend a visit when in the Newmarket area. Ok So I cannot say how good or bad the food or insides were as they were closed on Sunday when I went there at 1 Pm for the football game. Their webpage says they open at noon on Sundays for football. I can only tell you that from the outside they looked a bit run down but you cannot judge a book by its cover. I was really looking forward to going inside. Whats sports bar is closed on Sunday for football ??? Maybe the opened after 6 from what I heard from the bar down the street that was open See more..
