    New Castle 100 Archers image
I am an active member of this club and I visit it often. Although it is a private club they offer public shooting events, public lessons, private lessons , leagues and many numerous offerings for children with no membership required for much of them. They also work closely with Newark's Parks & Recreation for children. A real class act for simply being a little archery club. Founded in 1954 PS their memberships are really reasonable. See more..
  3. 5.0 Autumn Arch Beer Project (3 reviews)
    - Highly recommend
    Saturday: 12:00 PM - 10:00 PM Breweries
    Autumn Arch Beer Project image
First trip to area for work and lots of brewery options but nothing jumped out at me. Picked this one simply due to close proximity to another one (Midnight Oil). Autumn Arch was nice on multiple levels. First, the beer was very good, in fact the Double IPA and barrel-aged sour were both outstanding. I tried eight beers total and they were all well made. Secondly, the bartender (mother of the owners ;)) was super friendly, conversational, and offered additional samples simply because she thought I’d like them. Third, the tap room was clean, spacious, and just seemed to have a good vibe to it. I highly recommend people visit this brewery (and skip Midnight Oil). See more..
  4. 5.0 Hill Billy Hills Alpaca Farm (1 review)
    - Christmas on the Farm
    Farms
Hill Billy Hills Alpaca Farm image
We attended Christmas on the Farm at Hill Billy Hills Alpaca Farm today. It was a nice family event. They had a place to sit and write letters to Santa. Santa himself was there greeting the children. You could take a photo of your child visiting with Santa beside the tractor. They also had a table with cups of feed for the alpacas (pellets) and horses (carrots). They had hand sanitizer here. They have a wooden cutout where you could take photos of your family pretending to be alpacas or the sun. They also had chickens, ducks and buffalo for viewing. There were a couple of free roaming turkeys and the farm cat wandering about as well. There was NO CHARGE for any of the activities. However, they did have a donation box should you wish to donate. They also had a small table set up where you could purchase hand spun 100% alpaca yarn and Christmas ornaments that were filled with alpaca fibers. Overall, it is just a small family farm. They host events throughout the year for the community such as Alpaca Day on the Farm, Easter on the Farm, Christmas on the Farm, etc. I would recommend coming out to check it out during one of these events. Our children enjoyed Christmas on the Farm. They had so much fun feeding the alpacas/horses/pony, writing letters to Santa, visiting with Santa and checking out the other animals around the farm. Of course we had to bring home a few of the alpaca fiber ornaments too! See more..

    - Popular hiking and nature-lovers' destination.
    Saturday: State Parks
White Clay Creek State Park image
We come here most often approaching from the Delaware side but we also use Pennsylvania as our base. Some trails here span more than one state. Each time we choose a different route and it is always interesting hike. The park is quite extensive and the nature here is lush and beautiful. This time we enjoyed again the Tri-State Trail and Mason Dixon Trails. Tri-state monument is a popular landmark. In Delaware there is a park fee one needs to pay. Out of state it is $8. See more..

    - 800 meters uphill to 1.2 mile paved path around reservoir
    Bodies of Water
    Newark Reservoir image
Our first visit on an unseasonably warm sunny day in February. Almost every parking space was taken. Portable potties (2) available in excellent condition. Uphill distance was measured by a man with a measuring device - hence 800 meters - a winding wide path to the reservoir. From that elevation one can see the Delaware Memorial Bridge 14 miles away. Worth a visit. See more..

The park itself has multiple items of interest. First, is the only still suviving DuPont School built for Black American Children. It has old desks, a old stove, etc. Iron Hill itself is one of the highest locations in Delaware, and was used during war with England to keep track of what bay the English ships were coming into (Delaware Bay or Chesapeak Bay). It also was used to get Iron Ore. Lots of history in the Park. See more..

  13. 4.5 Newark History Museum (4 reviews)
    - Located along the railroad tracks and a walking trail
    History Museums
    Newark History Museum image
As a former railroad station, it is not surprising that the Newark History Museum is located along the railroad tracks and a paved walking/running/hiking trail. It is encouraging that several small town railroad stations along the eastern lines have been made into museums. There is plenty of parking under the bridge for College Avenue. Although the museum is not open in winter months, one can still enjoy the well-kept grounds and classic brick building. See more..

    George Read Park image
Newark high school is the oldest high school in Delaware and the town of Newark is home to the U of Delaware. George Read park sits across the street from the high school. Not only is the park attractive, but the whole town is quaint. George Read was a signer of the Declaration and the first paper mill in the United States was in Newark. As part of a stroll around Newark, this park is a good stop. See more..
  15. 4.5 Hale-Byrnes House (3 reviews)
    - Terrif Small House Museum
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM Historic Sites
It's a small brick house dating from the mid 18th century. The lovingly cared-form home of Quaker farmers, it was drawn into the Revolutionary War when General George Washington held a council in the house after the Battle of Cooch's Bridge in the September of 1777, shortly before the better known Battle of the Brandywine. Interesting programs on local history and cultural are regularly hosted at the house. A must -see for anyone touring the Revolutionary War in the region. See more..

    Iron Hill Museum image
Iron Hill Science Center gave my class an excellent experience with hands-on activities and a very interesting rocks & minerals lesson. They allowed the group to dig with picks to mine iron ore and even bring a small rock sample home. The rocks & minerals lesson/demonstration showed my class many beautiful examples of the 3 classes of rocks as well as many minerals. To finish the trip, my class enjoyed the wildlife and rock displays as well as the gift shop. We will return this next year as well. Thank you Iron Hill Science Center staff for a friendly, positive learning experience for our Providence Christian Academy students. Mrs. Rash-5th grade See more..

    Norma B Handloff Park image
Went here for a birthday party that was being held at one of the picnic pavilions. Pavilion was nice and provided good shade for the party. There was also a small cement slab that could probably be used for a skate park, some swings, a playground for the tots, a few tennis courts, a wall to practice tennis or play wall ball, baseball field and basketball court. Overall, it was a nice green space for a party that worked out well for a bounce house. There were picnic tables and a nice shade pavilion too. There was a port-a-potty on location. See more..
  24. 4.0 Cook Family Farm (1 review)
    - Wooden Yard Decor, Meats & Cheeses
    Saturday: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Farms
    Cook Family Farm image
We went to Cook Family Farm to check out the yard décor they had to offer for the holidays. They were offering lots of wooden yard items: snowflakes, small & large pickup trucks, Grinches, gnomes, sleds, sleighs, welcome signs, let it snow signs, etc. When we arrived, we were greeted and shown where we could park. Originally we had parked on the side of the barn, but he said it was OK to park in front of the barn door for safety since it was so icy and muddy out. We went into the barn to check out the items for sale. We ended up purchasing a Grinch on sale for $30. Staff was friendly and answered our questions. When asked about whether they made them here or not, we were told that they were Amish made from real wood (not compressed wood). Staff even encouraged the kids to go out and say hi to the farm cows before we left. Overall, we enjoyed our visit with Cook Family Farm. It was our first visit, but will probably not be our last. We will return to check out the Easter décor in the Spring. Also, we might try some of their beef, pork or cheese items offered for sale. I would recommend. See more..
  25. 4.0 Folk Memorial Park (1 review)
    - Nice kids playground close to I-95
    Saturday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Parks • Playgrounds
    Folk Memorial Park image
Stopped here one day with the kids after school as we had an unusually warm day in January. I thought we would check out a different park/playground than our norm. Kids really enjoyed the slide and play area. There are two kids swings and two baby swings. There is also a tennis court, basketball court, baseball field, picnic pavilion and walking trail around the perimeter of the park. Overall, I thought it was a nice park. It seemed clean and well maintained. Kids enjoyed it and so did I. Not far from I-95, so it could be a nice spot for travelers with kids to stretch their legs for a few minutes. See more..
  26. 3.5 Christiana Skating Center (20 reviews)
    - Great Kids Skating Program!
    Sports Complexes
    Christiana Skating Center image
As a family we really enjoy taking our daughter to the Tuesday Kid Skate day. It is $5 and includes their skates, story time and a cookie for snack. They get basic instruction and can follow the teacher around and do fun things like the limbo, hokey pokey, etc. I believe the program only runs in the cooler months and takes the summer off. Looking forward to going again in the fall! As far as the rink itself, I feel it is dirty and very aged. They have a snack area, lockers and bleachers. Fun place for the family. See more..

    Vince's Sports Center image
We had a local flavor deal that got us 4 admissions to miniature golf and a pizza for one low price. We went over on a mild November day since our coupon was expiring soon. We got to play both courses for the one low price. We did notice that they had made MANY improvements to the miniature golf course within the past year. They added new greens, new statues and repaired several others. It really looked good. Overall, we enjoyed our time at Vince's. We were there probably around an hour for all 4 of us to play both courses and grab a pizza to go. Staff were friendly. Prices are fair. I would recommend and we will be back. Note: Vinces also offers an indoor play area for toddlers/small kids, an indoor arcade, indoor batting cages and a Par 3 golf in addition to having the two 17 hole miniature golf courses and snack bar. Snack bar offers more than just pizza too! See more..
