Things to do & places to visit in New Castle, Delaware, United States

New Castle cover image
New Castle, Delaware, "the first capital of the first state," was founded in 1651. Having been home to Native Americans, the Dutch, and the British, New Castle truly is a "uniquely American place." The Amstel House is a Georgian mansion dating back to 1730. The Dutch House has survived from an even earlier period, featuring furnishings from the 17th century. With ancient graveyards, town greens, old churches and traditional English gardens, New Castle brings history alive.

    - Peaceful walk by the salty sea
    Parks
    Battery Park image
This is a beautiful walk close to New Castle's historic district. Stopped in New Castle for a leg rest mid-way through a drive not knowing quite what I'd find besides the history of the first state. This is a perfect walk, nicely paved and maintained, just on the water. You can smell the salty air or walk a little further and find shade tree-lined clearings. Even though it is fairly busy, there are moments where you can be all to yourself and it is simply peaceful. Walked for about an hour, then headed to see the rest of the town. See more..

  10. 4.5 Immanuel Episcopal Church (28 reviews)
    - Definitely worth a look!
    Religious Sites
    Immanuel Episcopal Church image
Taking a walk in this historic town I decided on giving this church a look. It's adjacent graveyard has many old headstones dating back all the way back to colonial times. I always find it interesting to read some of these old headstones, several were of children who died quite young, sad but in those days it was almost a given that not all children survived til adulthood. Some headstones are so old that time has worn them away. I found the inside somewhat simple but was surprised by the pews. I had never before seen pews like the ones here. They were sectional in a way with doors to enter (see pictures) unusual for me but maybe other Protestant churches in the area have similar type pews. Definitely worth a look when in New Castle. 15. 4.0 New Castle Farmer's Market (118 reviews)
    - UNIQUE and YUMMY jumble of farmers market and flea market
Saturday: 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM Flea & Street Markets
    New Castle Farmer's Market image
We love this place, it's a perfect stop between NYC and DC but it is not your typical farmers market. So this is a mix of traditional farmers market vendors like meat and baked goods and a crazy mix of international shops and discount stalls. We LOVE the Stotzfus area which has meat and baked goods and juices. They have every pie and lemonade you can dream of. We also like the other butcher near the front and got an EXCELLENT thanksgiving bird for a great price. The ice cream shop was closed this week, but it has tropical/latin unique flavors, popsicles, and my favorite ice cream sandwich. Finally the mexican restaurant and elote stand is also a fave. I like the especial tacos. I have bought veggies here, but the veggie and fruit market seems to be mostly a discount place, you wont find fancy heirloom tomatoes. Some reviews call the market dirty or shabby, we kind of love it for what it is, even if the first time we visited it was a surprise. See more..

We both got the 2 for $27 with wings and spinach & artichoke dip along with 2 Fiesta Lime chicken. We were all happy with our meats and the service was very friendly. They also took care of our toddler who had the mac n cheese. We find Applebee's to pretty standard and enjoyable. See more..
  20. 4.0 JB McGinnes Pub & Grille (1 review)
    - Went once and looking forward to visiting again
    Saturday: 11:00 AM - 1:00 AM Bars & Clubs
I went to JB McGinnes Pub with some friends to see a Rush cover band. I see while passing-by that they often have live music which is a HUGE plus for me, even if it isn't my kind of music. The stage is great, the lighting is high-quality, and the facility has ample seating if you get there early. The food was great and priced well. They obviously had an extensive drink list (they are a Pub!) and the cocktails were great. The service I am unsure about because it was crazy busy with the band there and we were at a bar table. The food was prepared quickly, though. It looks shady on the outside, but it is nice and welcoming when you enter. There was also a cover, but I think women got in free or cheap, and it may only be because there was a band there. I would recommend this place for adults who can be open-minded and not turned off by the shadiness of the plaza it is located in. Kids shouldn't be in a pub in my opinion, and probably wouldn't be welcome at night, so I would say get a sitter if you visit later in the evening! See more..

  24. 2.0 Deemers Beach (1 review)
    - Pebbly Beach
    Beaches
    Deemers Beach image
Stopped at this beach to check it out while in downtown Old New Castle. You can reach this small strip of beach by walking the trail along the wharf that passes through Battery Park OR by parking at the small access lot off of River Rd (Route 9) near Dobbinsville Park. The small access lot is NOT marked. It is an unpaved road that opens into a dirt parking lot. Here you walk up a small incline to arrived at the paved walking path. Across the path you will see lots of LARGE rocks lining the path and edge of a small cliff that overhangs the beach. There is no actual path leading down to the beach. There is NO EASY access to the beach. You have to climb down rocks to reach the beach. People have sort of made a makeshift set of stairs out of some of the smaller rocks. Once down onto the beach, you will find that it is a very pebbly beach. There are some small sections of sand, but it literally is a bunch of sea pebbles. We found lots of drift wood washed up along the rocks that line the cliff. Also, we found lots of trash and discarded belongings such as broken beach chairs. We did find a good amount of broken glass along the waters edge and throughout the small beach. We also, came across 2 dead fish. The smell was not pleasant. Across the water you get a distant view of the Nuclear Power Plant in NJ. On the plus side we did find several clam shells washed up on the shore. Plus it was free to visit. Overall, this is not a very desirable beach for swimming or wading. I did NOT see any signs indicating whether people could/should swim here or NOT. I also did not see any signs regarding fishing or crabbing. There was NO sign for the beach even, just an unmarked parking lot. There are no restrooms at the beach. There were 2 large trash cans at the parking lot entrance to the beach. Access to the water is not user friendly. See more..
