   The Carroll Rim Trail provides some of the best views of the Painted Hills in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This is the only long trail in this Unit of the Monument, and the trail is only 1.6 miles round trip. The trail climbs from the small parking lot at the trailhead to the top of Carroll Rim. If this parking lot is full, one could park a short distance away at the Painted Hills Overlook parking lot. The initial part of the trail is gravel and then it is dirt up the hill. In case of rain, the dirt trail could be sticky and slippery. The trail levels out as it traverses the ridge. At the top and end of the trail one gets an awesome 360-view of the Painted Hills including all the main features of the monument. See more..

   Great fun! This mine has some of the most beautiful thunder eggs. The people that run the mine are wonderful as well. We visited in the summer of 2016 and plan to go back this year during our trip to the Ochoco Mountains. We look forward to some fun digging these beautiful eggs. See more..

   One main street. Stopped to restock supplies. Groceries are in a mercantile with a little of everything. Only store in town besides a gift shop of oddities and a feed store. 1 gas station with old time pumps. See more..
