-A monument to the American dream
Speciality Museums
This is the home of an indentured servant who later became a landowner, and like the American dream, the house has endured over 300 years. The Thomas Massey House is one of the oldest English Quaker homes in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is on the National Register of Historical Places. The 1696 brick portion was built by Thomas Massey as an addition to the existing log or frame house. In 1731 his son, Mordecai, replaced the log or frame house with a stone section. A very precocious and likeable 9 year old son (named Daniel) of 1 of the docents actually gave the tour. He was very excited about and involved in sharing his knowledge of the site and some of the building's facts (such as what we would think is the back door was actually the front door when the house was first built). They also have events throughout the summer and early fall. I would definitely recommend a visit to this little-known treasure in Delaware County (suburban Philadelphia), Pennsylvania. See more..
