Glyndon began as a Victorian summer village nearly 160 years ago with the arrival of the Western Maryland Railroad from Baltimore in 1860. An outgrowth of the Glyndon Centennial celebrations was the addition of the village to the National Register of Historic Places. Since the railroad made the village possible, I visited the train station which is now the village post office. The Victorian homes, originally built for a summer escape into the cooler countryside, come in various styles and are all well-maintained on spacious lots and now form a permanent residential community. In addition to homes one finds the United Methodist Church built in 1879. Behind the church is another old building with signage indicating it was for Community Bible study. Farther down Butler Road is the Women's Club of Glyndon. Although the building is dated 1887, the women are still actively serving the community according to a newsletter I was given at the church. An historic plaque identifies another summertime activity in an area known as Emory Grove which was a religious camp ground founded in 1868. Although Glyndon is a relatively small community, a return visit is definitely needed to see more at a leisurely pace. See more..
